The Fall of Arthur | J.R.R. Tolkien
post image

Happy Sunday! My goal this week is to read a canto daily, but I‘m not sure I‘ll manage it consistently. Whether or not I get to post during the week, I‘m happy to be back to some Sunday mornings with Tolkien. I don‘t consider myself much of a poetry fan, but I love this alliterative style of narrative poem. The language is beautiful.

#FellowshipOfTolkien #MedievalTolkien #BreakfastWithTolkien #BookAndBreakfast

Daisey It‘s also been a while since I‘ve read any version of the Arthur legend, so I may need to look for something in audio form for some comparison. 17h
JazzFeathers You know? I was a fan of Arthurian legends before l was a Tolkien fan. When l was a teenager, l read both sours materials and many retellings. Yet, it's been a long time. It'll be fun to read something that gets these two passions of mine together 😊 13h
Daisey @JazzFeathers This should definitely be a great read for you then! I‘ll look forward to hearing your thoughts as we continue. 12h

Late as always, but l have started this book 😜

But so, this is an original Tolkien?
Is it not a translation, like Gawain and the Green Knight?

@Daisey @wordslinger42 @BookwormAHN @BethM @TheAromaOfBooks @curiouserandcurioser @BarbaraJean @Susanita @AllDeBooks @Cheryl_Russell_BookNotes @AnishalnkSpell

Bookwomble It's a translation exercise he didn't complete 🙂 17h
Daisey I think we‘ll be able to discuss this better with one of the included essays, but it seems to me from the foreword that retelling of the legend might be better description than translation of any particular version. 17h
Bookwomble @JazzFeathers Apologies, I was thinking of the medieval “The Death of Arthur“, which Tolkien used as a partial source for his own poem, but it's not a translation. I should fact check myself before rather than after posting! 🙄 (edited) 17h
JazzFeathers @Bookwomble Don't worry 😂 We're here to learn and discuss. I also keep calling this Mort d'Arthur and used to think it was another translation like Gawain. Such a pity Tolkien didn't finish this. But he was a very busy man, with so many interests. 13h

It‘s been a full day with family, so I‘m just now getting a chance to post about reading the foreword of The Fall of Arthur. It includes some interesting introductory information, and I‘m looking forward to staring the poem tomorrow! I‘ve enjoyed other poetry by Tolkien using an alliterative style, so I‘m intrigued to see what I think of this one. Anyone else gotten started already?

#FellowshipOfTolkien #MedievalTolkien

BarbaraJean I read the Foreword this afternoon! I‘m interested to start the poem tomorrow. 1d
TheAromaofBooks I did read the foreword yesterday. I'm not usually into poetry, but I actually LOVED the alliterative poem about Sir Gawain, so I'm quite intrigued to read this one. 20h

#NoPlaceLikeHolmes I am so glad I joined this buddy read. It has been both entertaining and enlightening. The Sherlock Holmes Definitive Audio Collection has proved to be an excellent investment. It is edited and narrated by Stephen Frye, who is absolutely marvelous. His introductions to the home novels and short story collections are brilliant, as is his narration. I just listened to his introduction to the tagged book. He provides (cont)⬇️

CatLass007 fascinating context for this novel. I do remember watching the movie he mentions, the Molly Maguires with Sean Connery. I don‘t remember Richard Harris, but who could remember Richard Harris when watching Sean Connery? I grew up in West Virginia. I am a proud believer in labor unions, although I have never been a member of one. I would encourage you to watch The Molly Maguires, and I also would encourage you to watch the movie, Matewan, (cont)⬇️ 2d
CatLass007 about the labor struggles in West Virginia. It stars Mary McDonnell, David Strathairn, and the always brilliant James Earl Jones. I just looked it up on IMDb and discovered that it also stars or features many people who were not famous at the time but who are now famous or highly respected in the field of acting. 2d
Daisey I‘m listening to this collection as well and loving it! 2d

CatLass007 @Daisey Are you co-hosting this one? Or maybe I‘m confusing it with something else you‘re co-hosting? I‘m just now asking myself this question. 2d
Daisey No, I‘m just following along with this one and not even participating in the discussion much, but I‘ve really been enjoying revisiting the stories on audio. 2d
CatLass007 @Daisey This is the first time I‘ve ever read any Sherlock Holmes. Are you co-hosting #FellowshipOfTolkien? Maybe that‘s where I‘m confused. (edited) 2d
dabbe @Cuilin and I (@dabbe) are hosting #NoPlaceLikeHolmes. We have been reading the canon in publication order and are now on Doyle's last novel, THE VALLEY OF FEAR. Feel free to tag #NoPlaceLikeHolmes to see all of our posts, and if you'd like to join our group, let me know, and I'll tag ya! 🩵🩶🩵 2d
CatLass007 @dabbe I did tag you and @Cuilin but when I saw @Daisey‘s post I confused myself. I‘m going to blame it on lack of sleep and hit the sack. 2d
dabbe @CatLass007 Our bads! You are now on the list, m'dear! 🤩😂😘 2d
Daisey Yes, I‘m cohosting the Tolkien read. Sometimes it does get complicated keeping track of all the readalongs. Looking forward to The Fall of Arthur! (edited) 2d
CatLass007 @dabbe How did I end up off the list? Because I‘ve been participating since the beginning. And I always get tagged on the discussion posts and the reminder posts. Not important though. 2d
CatLass007 @Daisey Well, both buddy reads have lasted for years, so that kinda is what got me confused I think. I‘m skipping Arthur, because it‘s not available as an audiobook and I think I would do better if I could listen and read the print at the same time. But I hope y‘all have a great time and don‘t take me off the tag list, please. 2d
dabbe @CatLass007 Probably because I'm a moron and somehow lost you! So sorry about that! You are now and forevermore on da list! 🤩😘 2d
CatLass007 @dabbe I know you‘re joking at your own expense, but things like that, if they happen frequently, make us feel bad about ourselves. You most definitely are not a moron! More positive self-talk is hereby ordered for you. 2d
dabbe @CatLass007 My husband tells me that as well. Thanks for the much-needed reminder! 😘 2d
CatLass007 @dabbe Your husband sounds like a wise man. 2d

#WhatTheDickens @cuilin @Texreader

Nicholas Nickleby has 65 chapters. Read at your own pace and discussion will be at the end of March.

Bookwormjillk I tried the last one on audio and the voice was so soothing I kept falling asleep. I‘m getting this one on kindle! 2d
Daisey I‘m going to try to continue, but I‘m not sure I‘ll be able to fit this one in during these next couple of months. Please keep me on the list! 2d

Cuilin @Bookwormjillk Maybe some of it‘s going in subliminally and you will start having the speech pattern of an 18 century Victorian lady!!! 2d
Cuilin @Daisey 👍 2d
CatLass007 I didn‘t know about this group. There are a ton of free Charles Dickens books on Audible and I think I‘ve added them all to my library. I would love to actually listen to one of them. Please add me to your tag list. 2d
Cuilin @CatLass007 absolutely 👍 I do a combo 📖 &🎧 2d
CatLass007 That‘s a good idea. I found that some selections for #FellowshipOfTolkien work best that way. But between migraines and multi-tasking I generally just listen. 2d

Repost for @Daisey

#FellowshipOfTolkien Readers, here‘s our plan for The Fall of Arthur! I would like to finish reading it in February, but I also think this book may require some slow, close reading. Remember our schedule is always a very loose guideline and feel free to post your thoughts at any time. I hope to make time to post each weekend if not during the week.

Tolkien readers, I‘m waiting on my copy to arrive in order to plan a timeline, but our next read will be The Fall of Arthur. @JazzFeathers and I hope to start at the beginning of February, but we can push it back if needed for interested readers to find copies.

Although I am tagging my entire Tolkien list today, please comment if you‘re interested in being tagged for this book specifically.
