Sauron Defeated | John R. R. Tolkien
56 posts | 4 read | 5 reading | 11 to read
In this volume Christopher Tolkein completes his account of the writing of The Lord of the Rings, beginning with Sam's rescue of Frodo from the Tower of Cirith Ungol and ending with an unpublished Epilogue in which years after the tale ends, Sam attempts to answer his children's questions. The book also includes The Notion Club Papers, a semi-fictional discussion between a group of Oxford Dons of the possibilities of travel in space and time and the legend of Atlantis. The third part of the book is devoted to a new version of the Numenorean legend - The Drowning of Anadune.

#FellowshipOfTolkien

What can l say? I adore the story of Numenor more every time l read it. It is such a perfect story inside the story in the Silmarillion.
What has always fascinated me is the way evil inplants itself with lies, as it seems to answer hard questions, and how some people still resists, come what will.
It is a story of loss, but also of hope, as so many of Tolkien's stories are.

Daisey I haven‘t picked my book up since I finished Part 2, but I‘m hoping to at least get to a few pages later tonight. Looking forward to this section! 38m

Really enjoyed this early version of the Fall of Numenor, one of my favourite stories by Tolkien since l first read The Silmarillion.
The story will become much more complex, still so much of utenti is already here.

All caught up again, felt like I was never going to make it to Part III.

Although The Notion Papers were interesting, I‘m always going to think there is so much more there going on just below the surface that had a lot to do with the members of The Inklings and some of their personalities and foibles seeping over into this story as fun academic teasing.

Onto part III!

I made it through the rest of the #NotionClub Papers. That last section all about language was tough again, and to be honest I might have skimmed through parts, but I‘m caught up again. So glad to be reading this with others so that I do get to those moments of great interest or insight without giving up.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I completely understand! As fascinating as I find all the languages he created, when it gets into the nuts and bolts of nasal vowel sounds verses script drawling styles...I just can‘t follow...maybe if there was a physical language class I‘d understand all of that better, however that was my least favorite part of learning my own language as a kid, so possibly not.😂 2d

#FellowshipOfTolkien

Read up to Night 70 of the #NotionClub Papers last night.
At some point, l'd like to compare this to the Lost Road. I don't remember it very well, now, but l seem to remember it was an easier read. But maybe l read it at a more related time.
I keep having the feeling that this writing was a private joke and that's why it's more difficult for us to got into it.

Daisey I very much agree with this. I want to compare it more closely, but I don‘t have time for that kind of careful comparative reading right now. I also feel this is more complex and analytical with a very specific audience in mind. 4d
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers & @Daisey I agree too. I think there is a lot of internal joking here and poking fun at Lewis‘s use of Númenor too. As I remember there were two version back in The Lost Road as well. A version told to the lost sailor in the Cottage of Play, and a brief version that was a time travel story of a father and son, but actual time travel, not this past remembered consciousness expressing itself through dreams and daydreaming as kids. 2d
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Mhm. I think there were dreams in The Lost Road too, at least in the beginning. @Daisey do you remember better than us? 😁 2d
Daisey @JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa I do seem to remember dreams, and the reader actually traveled into the dream instead of hearing about it later. However, that‘s also why I wish I could compare more closely, since I‘m not sure. 2d

Sunday books and breakfast included homemade pumpkin spice French toast sticks this morning. I‘m starting Night 68 and enjoying Part 2 of the Notion Club Papers much more than Part 1. Even when it gets a bit more dense, the connection to Middle-Earth keeps me more engaged.

Checkin time. I‘m at the beginning of Night 66, so about 3 days behind our original estimate schedule.

How‘s everyone else doing? I know a bunch of you are behind, but maybe behind in the same-ish place....so still together really.?‍♀️

How‘s it going? I know at Night 65 another retelling of the flood Atlantis/Númenor story is starting to emerge sort of a spin of the time traveling version way back in The Lost Tales (I think)⤵️

From deep discussions about how our minds bend past history with our perceptions and retelling of it...to discussing how each of them would view their meetings differently depending on their focus, etc (like this mirror of the inklings)....to talking to the future people who may be reading this and studying these Club meeting...to the story of it taking on a secondary life of its own through those reading it now.

Layer upon layer as he both ⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ...digs deeper, peels back the layers...and I can‘t help but feel, pokes fun at their group, and further out a layer, at us the readers/study-ers now. 🤪. #NotionClub #FellowshipOfTolkien 1w
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa This part reminded me a lot of an article about storytelling l read. It discussed the difference between story and chronicles, pointing out that even when we decided what to tell first about what actually happend, we're weaving a story, because we're giving different importance to diffetent events according to our own experience and understanding of them. 1w

There really is some great thinking in here as to how truth and myth overlap and collide...like those great conversations you had way too late at night with a friend in college perhaps, deep thinking.

I finally finished Part 1 of The Notion Club Papers. I really appreciated some of the points discussed (I even added post-its!) at the beginning, but a lot of the later portion was more dense and took quite a bit of focus to read. In these longer sections I‘m also back to two bookmarks, the book dragon for my place in the main text and a smaller magnetic bookmark for the notes.

#NotionClub #FellowshipofTolkien #YearsofTolkien

JazzFeathers Agreed. I also read after a long day at work (still working overtime) and this part has been trying. But it is interesting, and l mean to read it again at a less tiring time. Also, l knew the Professor had a great analitic mind. This is prove of it 😆 1w
Daisey @JazzFeathers Yes, I do think I need to read it again later to get more from it. I've always thought Tolkien was analytical and this absolutely verifies that. 1w

#FellowshipOfTolkien

Finished The first part of the #NotionClub Papers yesterday night.
Such a different read. And a dense one too. I'm sure l'll read it again.

It seems to me this is a deep update to Tolkien‘s On Fairy Stories, but l also agree with @Riveted_Reader_Melissa this is an inside jokes between Tolkien and his fellow Inklings. I don't think it was never meant to be publish.

Now excuse me. I understand Numenor is waiting 😍

Daisey I‘m appreciating it, but it is definitely more dense. I thought I would easily finish Part 1 last night, but that was not the case. 1w
JazzFeathers @Daisey Took me three days to read through it. It is a very in-depth, and l think partly academic read - one of the reasons why l think @Riveted_Reader_Melissa has a point when she says this is an inside joke between Tolkien and his fellow Inklings. But l started Part 2 last night and that sounds more of a story. 1w

From Night 60 of The Notion Club Papers: Some commentary on the level of detail and careful consideration put into the writing process . . .

#NotionClub #FellowshipofTolkien #YearsofTolkien

JazzFeathers I so agree to this. And still, I've seen this principle trumpled over and over... especially by fantasy authors, l'm sorry to say. I'm more or less in this area too. It's such a strange reading, which l'm sure l'll read again. It feels like a deeper look at the same matter of On Fairy Stories. 2w

I can‘t help feeling as I finish Part One of The Notion Paper as I did at the very beginning...it‘s brilliant and overly erudite, and quite too much to wrap your head around really... and there is way more subtext here about the “friendly” rivalry between him and C.S. Lewis than we can probably ever glean without actually being in that friendship.

But also that there is a ton of inside jokes between members of the real Inklings & this fictional⤵️

Riveted_Reader_Melissa ....group....and maybe, in some weird way, this is Tolkien explaining to himself how he dreamed up elves, their multiple languages, and learned of their past history from earlier prehistoric memory as the Silmarillion kept making itself known over the more pressing LOTR. 🤷‍♀️. On to Part II! #NotionClub #FellowshipOfTolkien (edited) 2w
JazzFeathers I'm hoping to finish part 1 tonight... and l totally agree with everything you say. I've found it especially challanging to read because l read at night, after a long day at work. I'm sure l'll read this again. It is, if l truly consider it, a fascinating look into the mind of a fantasy writer. 2w
JazzFeathers But l find the dynamics of the group fascinating too. There is such a natural feel to all the dialogues. I'm sure you're right about the parallel to the Inklings. 2w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers plus he starts out making each name a code name for a real person, then puts in the introduction that they shouldn‘t look too closely at the warped mirror to find themselves....so yes, I‘m think there is a lot of gentle teasing, poking fun, etc at his fellow writers just below the surface, jokes they would have gotten and recognized immediately that without knowing all their mannerisms/speech patterns we‘ll never get in the same way. 2w
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa l agree. It does sound like a 'private' writing, not something that he ever meant to publish. 2w

OK... I love Tolkien with all my heart, but I'm currently feeling very thankful that he abandoned the Notion Club Papers in favor of finishing LOTR. Some small bits are kind of interesting, but for the most part, I am just really not enjoying this 😴

#YearofTolkien #LOTRHistory

Daisey I‘m not far, but I understand what you mean. There are little bits that really speak to me and other sections where I‘m struggling to stay engaged. 2w
wordslinger42 @Daisey Yes! I feel so distracted while I read, like I end up checking Litsy more often than I turn a page 😅 2w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 I completely agree, these were much more challenging for me to read and stay engaged, where the LOTR‘s chapters flew by. 2w
wordslinger42 @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Glad I'm not alone! I'll be very happy when we're done with this section! 2w
Riveted_Reader_Melissa @wordslinger42 Same here! It definitely feels more of a great group brainstorming what-of session, less of a great read, in my opinion anyway...so great if you were there, not so great as a story to just read....and I‘m not sure all the footnotes help either, this might be one of the few cases where they make it more confusing sometimes. 2w

Loved reading this unused epilogue to The Lord of the Rings, the way Tolkien first envisioned the book to end.
Yes, the final version is more powerful, and it's not hard to see why Tolkien went with it in the end.

It's also not hard to see Tolkien himself surrounded by his own children in his studio, telling them stories. I understand why he was fondo of that epilogue.

Oh, wow!! I knew the ending was to be very different because of all my fellow Tolkien readers' comments, but I mean... no Saruman, Frodo a chieftain of hobbits!

I find it interesting that the parts concerning the Shire seem to have gone through some of the most important changes, as if Tolkien himself didn't really trust them to tell an epic story at first.
This is a far simpler ending than the one we know.

Riveted_Reader_Melissa I was a shocked that Frodo was suddenly a warrior in the first version...when he wasn‘t exactly a sword fighter in the rest of the book up until that point. Sam however, fighting for home as fiercely as he did for Frodo would have seemed less shocking to me. 2w
JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa True. But l suppose that's in part true for Frodo as well. He suffered a lot and it was all for his homeland. And then he comes home and find out that the Evil he thought he's overcome has taken roots in his own home. I can see why that first direction. We're probably shocked because we know what it morphed into. 2w

It's always such a mixed bag when ideas occurred to Tolkien kind of suddenly.
On the one hand, it's fantastic to see ideas take form. I loved seeing Tolkien's idea about Saruman changing while writing. How he abandoned the idea of a redemption, because the character didn't call for it.
On the other hand, it leaves you wanting. I'd have loved to know a lot more of how Arwen entered this story.

I went ahead and finished Part One today in the hammock at sunset before the temperature dropped. I completely understand why Tolkien chose not to include this epilogue in The Return of the King, but I did enjoy seeing this extra snippet of Sam‘s life with his family. This page shows a letter from Aragorn to Sam in Elvish.

Daisey @Readerann Thanks! It‘s about time to put the hammock away for this year, but I‘ve been hoping for just a couple more afternoons warm enough to enjoy it. 3w
Daisey @Texreader Yes! These little bits of additional detail are amazing. 3w

A friend of mine always tells me that every time she reads The Lord of the Rings she's tempted to stop at Cormallen... and often she does. That's where the story ends in glory and when everyone is rewarded. Where a 'happily ever after' is possible.

But l think that part of the reason why The Lord of the Rings is so special is that it goes beyond it.

Wow...what a different ending! Although his final ending was much better with the story and personalities, I did enjoy reading this one.

Instead, in the case of the episode of Orodruin, although Tolkien knew the events quite precisely from a very early stage, he seemed to hesitate for a long time about motives.
The details kept changing for a long time.

Daisey I found this section fascinating! 3w

It's awesome that Tolkien wrote the conclusion of the journey of Frodo and Sam basically without hesitations. But it was a Part of story that he had know for s long time. For years.

Loved to see Sam coming into his own. I especially loved seeing how Tolkien hesitated between having him soccumb to the power of the Ring, or resist it.
I'm happy he finally decided that Sam had the strength in him to renounce the Ring and that that strength come from his land and his people and his love for everything and everyone he cares for.
This is truly the core of Tolkien's philosophy, in my opinion.

Daisey I really appreciated this development as well! 4w

Yesterday started out cool and misty so I made a batch of spicy chicken soup with some of the last fresh jalapeños, and it was perfect for supper again tonight.

I read a chapter before supper and finished up this next one after. It was good to finally see Arwen appear by name, and as they travel I‘m curious to see the first drafts of the hobbits return to the Shire.

Really enjoyed this chapter, as l always enjoy chapters that are mostly synopses.
This is a very intense part of the story, and l'm not surprised Tolkien worked a lot on it. Still, some of the earlier ideas are quite surprising, like the fact that Frodo might become some kind of a Lord of the Nazgul when he claimed the Ring.

It's also interesting to see how some ideas that remained in tge story first emerged.

I continue to find it amazing to read more about Tolkien‘s writing process. Sometimes he struggled through draft after draft and wrote questions to himself when things didn‘t seem to make sense. Then at other times the basic ideas emerge early, not much is drafted, and a complete draft appears almost all at once.

hannahvclark I read his biography years ago for a high school project. Learning about his life and his process was so amazing! 1mo
Daisey @hannahvclark I agree, and I truly appreciate the work that Christopher has done to make the writing in the History of Middle-Earth available to any reader that wants further delve into his creative process. 1mo

I really enjoyed this short chapter. I always think it's interesting to read about certain sections where Tolkien's ideas were almost fully formed from the start. It doesn't happen very often for me when I'm writing, but it's always exciting when it does!

I managed to get through this chapter last night even though I have been exhausted the last few nights. I doubt I‘ll stay caught up through the week. I always love when reproductions from Tolkien‘s manuscripts are included. Although I can‘t read the writing, the combination of writing and drawing is wonderful to me.

JazzFeathers @Riveted_Reader_Melissa Ehy, gals, no, l'm not caught up, but l'll do my best over the weekend. How's everyone else doing? I don't want to cause delays, and really l can't wait to start the new book (finished The War of the Ring last night). I'm good with whatever 😉 1mo

Riveted_Reader_Melissa @JazzFeathers @Daisey Sounds good, but again just let me know if anything changes or you fall too far behind. We need to keep the fellowship together, can‘t leave anyone behind!😉 1mo
