pickA friend recommended that I give Jacqueline Winspear‘s Maisie Dobbs series a try. I was looking for something that my 92 year old mom and I could share — she listens, I read. We started with this one, first in the series. The author does a great job of combining a good mystery while also introducing us to Maisie‘s back story. Set in the aftermath of WWI, with flashbacks to the character‘s war service. Looking forward to the next book in the series

pickMaisie returns to her childhood neighborhood to investigate the death of Eddie, a simple man with a gift for caring for horses. This one is more about Maisie's personal growth than a murder plot. She's working through her need for control, struggle to feel worthy of her unexpected wealth, & desire for independence. I love the character-driven story, so it worked for me. Hints of the war to come are starting to take centerstage in the story.
pickThe layers she builds are complex and so well done. I loved seeing more development in Maisie, even when she has to make hard choices. Such an enjoyable but also deep read.
pickI loved this one! A historical-fiction mystery, this one follows Maisie, a former WWI nurse, who now opens her own detective agency. The book, which flips between the 1920s mystery and flashbacks that reveal Maisie's past, is good storytelling.
pickBook 6 in the #MaisieDobbs series hits a new level of peril for both our MC as well as society at large with a madman with chemical weaponry skills on a threatening rampage at Xmas 1931 in London. Yikes. Also a higher level of govt secrecy and intro of govt agencies using yet also thwarting our Maisie. This will take her and the series in new directions, of course, but is not cozy per the usual Maisie murder vibe…
pickThe 5th in the #MaisieDobbs series of between wars mysteries was heartbreaking several times over. A current case uncovers a tragedy from WWI in small-town Kent. So many themes and connections, lots of growth for our favorite characters. Thoughtful consideration of what being labelled outsiders can lead to. Any book that makes me cry is doing its job drawing me in! By far the best one yet.
