A friend recommended that I give Jacqueline Winspear‘s Maisie Dobbs series a try. I was looking for something that my 92 year old mom and I could share — she listens, I read. We started with this one, first in the series. The author does a great job of combining a good mystery while also introducing us to Maisie‘s back story. Set in the aftermath of WWI, with flashbacks to the character‘s war service. Looking forward to the next book in the series
I loved this one! A historical-fiction mystery, this one follows Maisie, a former WWI nurse, who now opens her own detective agency. The book, which flips between the 1920s mystery and flashbacks that reveal Maisie's past, is good storytelling.
Where have I been that #MaisieDobbs is new to me? Well, the timing is perfect & this book hit my current sweet-spot mood-wise mixing mystery, WWI, and a smart female MC. While plot starts with Maisie setting up her investigative office 10 years post-war, much of the book covers her backstory from maid to Uni to frontline nurse. War/postwar topics/feelings are well done. The best part of being late to discover a series? Tons of books ahead of me!
I feel like I've been seeing posts on Maisie every time I'm on Litsy lately, and made the happy discovery that my library has at least the first 3 books. I can understand now why these books are so deeply loved and admired. It was really a light but very special read 💜💜💜
I see why friends have been telling me to read Maisie Dobbs. The first book is so good! It‘s a trope I‘ve seen before (plucky wartime nurse comes home to England after the war, solves mysteries), but I‘m OK with that. I‘m not so sure I‘ll be into the espionage themes in later books, but I enjoyed the first book so much, I‘m willing to try the rest of the series.
Starts off with a somewhat inconsequential mystery which as Maisie dives deeper is more intricate.
As a first book, the author decided to invest half of it to Maisie's history with the Compton's and World War 1. This left the mystery part a little as an afterthought. I wonder how the other books in the series progress as the main backstory of the character has already been mined?
Will progress with the second as I do like Maisie Dobbs.
I really enjoyed getting to know Masie how she started out and all the characters that helped shape her life. So sad all the descriptions of the war and how it changed and effected so many lives including Masies. I will definitely be reading more in this series
"Amid the tales, the smokescreens, and the deceptive mirrors of life's unsolved mysteries, truth resides, waiting for someone to enter its sanctum, then leave, without quite closing the door behind them. That is when truth may make its escape."
⭐⭐⭐⭐☆
My favorite pastime is being Sirius's pillow. ??
Really liked this! It‘s an engaging read and I‘ll likely read others in the series.
I‘m going on a Maisie Dobbs Binge for the #BacklistReadathon. I‘m finished up to book 10 in the series so will be starting with A Dangerous Place, which comes following her sojourn.
Thoroughly recommend Jacqueline Winspear‘s books if you haven‘t read them.

This was between a pick and so-so for me. I really liked the beginning of the story and following Maisie along on her quest as a detective. I thought the jump back in time to tell her backstory was a bit clunky (and probably should have been a separate book, or the beginning of this book). And then the mystery part at the end seemed rushed. I'm not sure I'll continue with this series but I really did like all of the characters.

It's official I have a new favorite character and series. Started this one today and finished it in one sitting. Fast paced and with really engaging characters. Part mystery and part historic fiction with one strong FMC. Off to start book 2 in the series.
4. Really enjoyable first book in series, quick read and will definitely pick up the next one. 4/5
I‘m looking forward to more Maisie Dobbs adventures. Part mystery, part historical fiction, this book was a great get away!
Love this series. Found a piece the author wrote in May(I think) and published link on fb. Thought it would be interesting for all. #witches #pagans #JacquelineWinspear

This is the first book in a long series that people keep recommending to me. Maisie is a clever woman working as a detective of sorts after WWI. She and almost everyone she knows are still dealing with the trauma they experienced during the war. As she investigates a retreat for wounded soldiers her own heartbreaking past comes to light. Her relationship with her mentor added an interesting depth. A great introduction to a series I will continue!
I see why there‘s a 50/50 split on whether someone likes or dislikes this book. For me it‘s a big hell yes. It was like a cozy cup of tea under a blanket, sitting in front of the fireplace. It wasn‘t going to keep you on the edge of your seat but you‘re going to want to know what Maisie is thinking about….at least I did.
Gentle and pleasant enough read although a tad clunky. Unfortunately it‘s not really a detective novel. And major crime committed by the author in saying that the River Thames starts at Thame !
Audio. I was interested at the start, then sort of missed the going back in time (although it did say the year at the start and I sort of wasn‘t thinking, as I vaguely recall hearing the new date). From there to the end of the book, what I paid attention to was patchy. I was partly interested again for part of her time during the war. There were very few characters I remembered who they were when mentioned again later in the book. Cont in cmts.
Finished my March #Bookspin. This was a mixed read for me. I became really engrossed in the story and the setting, while I found the writing uneven and the plotting way too neat and tidy. Maybe I‘m just not a cozy mystery person. 🤷🏻♀️ Might‘ve been a pick if not for the final bit about Simon which really put me at odds with Maisie. Perhaps that‘s further developed in the series but on its own, not a satisfying end note. 21//2 ⭐️s
My friend is looking for a Maisie Dobbs readalike. The only possibility I can think of is Amy Stewart‘s Kopp Sisters series. Littens, do you have any suggestions?
This is the first book in the series and I am finally glad to have read it. I started in the middle of the series and went forwards. We find out about Maisie's childhood, how she met Maurice and the family. And I am also glad to have found about her first love Simon, as he is often mentioned! #books
I enjoyed listening to this #Audible #audiobook. Maisie‘s intelligence and powers of observation were highlighted, along with her experiences as a Red Cross nurse during WWI. The mystery is not the main focus, but it was interesting nonetheless. I would read another book in this series.
The mystery itself wasn‘t anything amazing, but I really loved getting to know Maisie Dobbs! Will definitely be reading more books in this series.
Autumn is in the air. I will miss all our hikes in the mountains. On to skiing! So glad I live close to such beauty.
Day 13 #20series20days #top20series
Maisie Dobbs was a nurse in WWI and has since learned the art of private investigation. She is very introspective and observant as both a PI and fellow human.
#20series20days Day 10 I‘ve read all but the last 3 and enjoy the mysteries as well as the life and times of Maisie and her supporting cast of family, friends and co-workers.
An excellent first book in the Maisie Dobbs series, which covers her early life including a time as a #Nurse in the First World War, prior to becoming a private investigator.
This is a great series.

This books has the best similes. The best. Great interweaving of stories. Highly recommend.
Christmas Blessings from my Litsy penpal! Warning: that fellow reader that you chat with through Litsy just might become one of your dearest friends. I am looking forward to diving into Maisie Dobbs. Not pictured are the fantastic gummy candies. Those go fast around here:) Merry Christmas @JackOBotts
I didn‘t know much about this book before I picked it up. I assumed it would be a mystery with a fun main character and this seemed light on the mystery to me with most of the focus being on characters dealing with aftermath of WWI. I still really enjoyed the characters and will try to read more of the series now that the groundwork had been laid down.
I liked this book, especially the parts about Maisie's childhood and war experiences, but I'm not sure I know who Maisie really is. There seemed to be a distance between her character and the reader. I don't think that I will read the other books in that series.
Thanks @Lmstraubie , I finally got around to reading this one. (Whisper voice: I‘ve had it a long time 🤫). I liked the story and I liked Maisie, but I‘m not enamored enough to get into the series. Fans of historical fiction may be interested though. 2/5⭐️s
As I said in a previous post, this was a re-read for me. I think I enjoyed it more this time around. I'm not sure if I will continue to read the rest of the series, as I've read the majority of them already, but I might consider it depending on what else I have in the offing on my TBR list. But, this book is definitely a thumbs up pick, especially if you like mysteries with a smart, savvy female detective as the protagonist. 👌 👍
I liked it, but it did not make me want to stay up late to finish. The main storyline with the mystery takes place in 1929, but there‘s a huge chunk in the middle with Maisie‘s backstory, her time as a nurse during WWI, and how she ultimately ended up solving mysteries. Love the characters, especially Maisie and her dad. I was surprised by how heavy the end of the story was and I still feel that heaviness, even though I finished last night.
Maisie is a detective who was also a nurse in WW1. This first book in the series explains how she became both. It had both suspenseful and heartwarming parts, and Maisie is a likeable character, but it didn‘t really pull my interest in until near the end. I liked how the mystery was resolved; it was a light but solid mystery, but I‘m not sure at this point that I will read more of the series.

+2 team theme: mystery
I love getting up before everyone else to spend a little while reading. This lite mystery is perfect for late night and early morning ☕️📖
Quick snapshot of my (many) current reads:
Triptych for the #TriptychBuddyRead • Lie To Me for my book club this week • The Winter Sea because it‘s overdue at the library • Maisie Dobbs because I wanted to read a cozy mystery (although I‘m not sure it is?)
Anybody read any of these? 🙋🏻♀️

Lots of mixed reviews on here but I loved this one. Nice to find a new series to get into. Maisie, who was a nurse during WWI, has a special intuition about people and uses it to conduct investigations and heal psyches. Her relationship with her father is beautiful and the her personal war time story brought me to tears.
Morning book and coffee before we set off to explore the San Juan islands.
It was okay.
A little too superficial, gumshoey, plucky heroine is calm in a crisis.
But happy to finally know what this series is all about. Probably won‘t be reading more, unless they get more interesting- any advice?
I enjoyed this book. It‘s the first of a series and is pretty cool in that Maisie is a feminist in the 1920‘s. I may pick up the second one, but I have a “to read list “ before it happens. 3.5🌟
