Heroes of Olympus, The, Book Five The Blood of Olympus | Rick Riordan

Did I cry? Yes. Did I love it? Also yes! I finished this book yesterday, and it was AMAZING! Here‘s my fill out of wanderinglynn‘s Off My Shelf. I‘ll be using this for any book I read this year that matches one of these. The three books I have so far are The House of Hades and The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan and Escaping Peril: The Graphic Novel by Tui T. Sutherland. I apologize for the tilted picture.

Not sure who is following #RiordanverseReadalong but I figured I‘d do a check in/final thoughts post

How did you enjoy or not enjoy the book? Any favourite characters or moments?

The next book we‘ll be reading will be The Son of Neptune in February

I was a bit underwhelmed. I found the characters a bit bland and there wasn‘t any connection between them. Hoping this changes! Percy is just so hard to follow

I am divided by this book. All the way through I had to keep reminding myself this was a children's book because it is badly researched, weirdly paced, and very repetitive.

Things happen to the characters, they don't make things happen. The characters themselves were rather bland and there was no connection between them.

PuddleJumper 1. It was difficult to get into because the characters either don't know who they are or are keeping secrets even during their POV chapters.

It really did not need to be as long as it was! So much could have been cut out and it wouldn't have impacted the plot.

I'm coming late to this series so hopefully things improve in later books/series but the writing of women was questionable

PuddleJumper 2. Now, onto the fun stuff. I'm going to preface this by saying, classicists by nature are pedantic assholes.

First thing, Riordan's representation of the Greek gods is Romanised. He bases many aspects of their personality and history on Latin sources rather than available Greek sources.

This makes things very messy when introducing the Roman facet of the Greek gods. He should have just made them a separate pantheon.

PuddleJumper 3. He says the Roman gods are harsher because of the Roman empire. The Athenians would like to fight you about their lack of empire in this universe.

The Greek city states were constantly warring with each other during the Archaic and Classical period. They weren't less ‘warlike‘.

PuddleJumper 4. Arguably, Rome sustained such a large empire for so long because they were amazing administrators. No one cares about that aspect of their godhood. Let me see Mars, arbiter of the war fund. 2w

PuddleJumper 5. Another gripe of mine is the representation of Aphrodite and her children. There's a denigration of femininity and this weird idea that beauty and femininity are the same thing. Aphrodite‘s children are portrayed as weak because they are vain and interested in stereotypically feminine things.

PuddleJumper 6. When Piper is claimed by Aphrodite, she is transformed so that she is wearing a dress that makes her uncomfortable, make-up and better hair. What a shallow idea of beauty.

Piper's strengths are always framed as ‘for a kid of Aphrodite.‘ If you want your interpretation of Aphrodite to be vain and jealous then she should be terrorising these kids for their disrespect. Piper is amazing because she is her kid and not in spite of it.

PuddleJumper 7. Overall, it wasn't terrible but it's not something I particularly enjoyed reading.

Booksblanketsandahotbeverage I‘ve read these and I liked his Trials of Apollo series more. The books were shorter, for one, and a funny haiku started each chapter. (edited) 2w

Laughterhp I‘ve never read Rick Riordan. Do you have to have already read Percy Jackson to enjoy these? (That‘s the only series I know). 3w

PuddleJumper @Laughterhp It's a bit yes/no from what I can tell. Heroes of Olympus is a different series, different characters but set in the same universe as Percy Jackson and I think there's a bit of crossover with side characters. I don't think you need to have read the Percy Jackson books though 3w

mom2bugnbee @Laughterhp You definitely do NOT need to have read Percy Jackson for any of the other series besides Heroes of Olympus, because the others are completely different universes. Knowing PJ helps with Heroes of Olympus, but not strictly required. 3w

mom2bugnbee I just re-read The Lost Hero, so I'll join you in February! Been planning a re-read of Heroes of Olympus & Kane, & I haven't read any of the Norse or Apollo books! 3w

In his efforts to get 3 godly recommendation letters for his New Rome application, Percy is enlisted to pet & house sit for Hecate, goddess of magic & crossroads. It goes about as well as you‘d expect.

I love Percy‘s voice so much. His humor & his empathy are so wonderful. The friendship between Percy, Annabeth, & Grover is delightful. & the resolution was satisfying! & we got backstories for minor characters! I can‘t wait for book 3.🌕🌕🌕🌕🌑

I have been along for the ride for many of the Rick Riordan books (literally, as Trix has listened to most of them during commutes to and from school) and read all of the early books to Polly. But they have become increasingly formulaic and it really felt as though this was just to meet a publishing deadline. Guess I am not the target audience - Trix found it entertaining enough, although does enjoy the earlier books more.
