The Sellout: A Novel | Paul Beatty

My #readingblackout books for this month! What did you read?

Pickpick

Actual perfection. Three blessed (or cursed) souls fight for versions of freedom, intermingling with one another and the history of the founding of Liberia. So, so good. Magical realism at its finest, paying tribute to African folklore and with lyrical prose. All the stars. All of them. #readingblackout #onceyougoblackout

We Cast a Shadow: A Novel | Maurice Carlos Ruffin

Pickpick

An incisive, searing satire set in a future post-post-racial America where a Black man risks his very soul to try to save his son from being Black in this country. Really, really powerful and all too realistic. #readingblackout #onceyougoblackout

ChasingOm This is on hold for me at the library — I‘m going to pick it up tomorrow! 6y

So far I HIGHLY recommend reading Dorothy Butler Gilliam's book. I'm listening to the audiobook and the more I listen the more I want to know and the more I wish my public education had included more of the history she writes about. A thought provoking and mind igniting #ReadingBlackout 😍.

Monday morning feels... Page asks do I read or struggle to keep my eyes open and go back to sleep dreaming of the weekend and books? Starting another read for #ReadingBlackout. How was everyone's weekend reading?

My hair matches my book cover 😂! I'm on book 4 for the month and having a hard time sticking with it. One because Marlon James' book is now in my hands and two because it is taking a minute for it to get going. This book serves triple purposes. It is for #ReadingBlackout this month. It is helping me in reading more of what I already own. And it will help me check off the alternative history task for #ReadHarder. (cont. in comments)

LitDrivenGirl Inside cover: What if the history of the transatlantic slave trade had been reversed, and Africans had enslaved Europeans?

What is everyone reading this week? #FridayReads

Thick: And Other Essays | Tressie McMillan Cottom
post image
Pickpick

Tressie McMillan Cottom is such a compelling author. I read this one way too fast and will read it again and again, I‘m sure. Each essay has line after line of insight, to the point where highlighting or underlining would be fruitless as entire pages would be marked. Excellent first book of my #readingblackout and alternative to watching the state of the union.

Megabooks It is a fantastic book! 6y
WhatDeeReads This was one of those that made me say, “ this book I‘m reading says...” a lot. 6y
