pick5 Stars • The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store by James McBride is about a mixed Black and Jewish neighborhood in Pottstown, PA, back in the 1920s and ‘30s. It kicks off with a skeleton found in a well and follows Chona, who runs this little store, and her husband Moshe, who owns a theater. It‘s all about how these folks stick together and deal with life‘s messy stuff like race and belonging.
