Goodnight Tokyo | Atsuhiro Yoshida

Putting all the books I want to read/finish reading by the end of the year in one place was probably a mistake. 😜 This is a lot! I do plan on listening to the audiobook for several of them (and switching to audio for a couple that I can't get motivated to finish), so that will help.

While the book has its fair share of issues—particularly around sexism—it might be somewhat forgivable given its 1970s–80s Japan setting. The story unfolds through multiple POVs, all tied to a seemingly random murder in an unfinished building in Osaka, involving the victim‘s son and the suspect‘s daughter.

This book is an interesting horror/thriller type story, and I probably wouldn't have done what Kenji did. I imagined she was fascinated by Frank.

Very lyrical and literary hence the Booker shortlisting. Plot less obvious, but a good read.

“Machiko Yoneoka eventually gave a curt nod of the head and gave them a name; a woman‘s name. Mogi had a vague feeling that it was a name he had heard somewhere before. He looked across at (her), intending to ask her to repeat it, and was surprised to see the woman looked quite terrified. Mogi turned to his left to see what she was staring at. It was Kaga. His eyes were the eyes of a hunting dog that has found its prey.”

Lots of books read since my last Litsy post!!
I‘ve been off the internet for a few months…
I‘ve loved the Japanese crime genre, Conclave by Robert Harris which I read just before the recent Conclave. Brooklyn, Long Island and The Safe Keep were also favourites!

BarbaraBB Good you‘re back! And I live this author but haven‘t heard of this title! Stacking! 4mo

Did you ever want to be a tour guide in another country? Did you ever want to be one for the not so family friendly side of this country? Well, this book might change your mind. This book was a perfect with the idea of “What could happen if the tourists you‘re dealing with… might be something he isn‘t?” A quick slow burn. I recommend reading it at a least once.

I couldn‘t finish this book. The « hunter‘s log » made my skin crawl. I had an inkling about the ending, so I flipped through the last few chapters to confirm that hunch.
