This is the 4th in the Detective Kaga series translated to English. I‘ve read Malice & A Death in Tokyo, somehow missed Newcomer. It‘s good if you read them in order, so you‘ll get a little backstory of Detective Kaga, but no matter if you don‘t. You may get confused in the beginning because of the characters‘ names (luckily there‘s a character list) but soon you‘ll be familiar with them. Reading Japanese police procedural..⬇️

erzascarletbookgasm .. fiction is so different from others, partly because of the cultural aspect. The Final Curtain shows us the painstaking police work, touches on mental health, family sacrifice, moral complexity and even health risks of workers of nuclear power plants. An intricate plot, a satisfying read. Is this really the last we see of Detective Kaga? I‘ll be so sad. 3mo

Higashino constructs such an elegant resolution to the opening murder, which is both simple & insanely complicated all at the same time. I particularly like how we follow multiple detectives as they pursue their lines of inquiry, really showing how complex a case this is. And the writing is just so crisp & precise!

2/3 library books (and 4/6 overall) for #JoyousJanuary AND progress for #SeriesLove2024

Throughout this series, I couldn‘t help but think about Agatha Christie‘s Hercule Poirot character. Detective Kaga is Poirot‘s reincarnation in Japan. It becomes even more evident in the titles. ⬇️

suvata Christie‘s last Poirot novel was named Curtain. Higashino‘s last Kaga novel is called The Final Curtain. Coincidence? I think not.

Both detectives, solve their cases by slowly unfolding details, piece by piece, and finding missing pieces along the way until the completed puzzle is finally revealed. I sure hope that my conclusions are incorrect because I would truly miss the impeccable Mr. Kaga. ⬇️ (edited) 6mo
