The Ninth Rain | Jen Williams

#WyrdAndWonder day 3 is #TropeTuesday and we‘re exploring enchanted woods. I‘m going slightly off piste and choosing the Wilds of Sarn, a forest of mutant vegetation and parasite spirits in The Ninth Rain by Jen Williams.

…and it‘s not too late to sign up to #WyrdAndWonder and enter the competition to win a copy of this magnificent trilogy 😁

The Green Man's Heir | Juliet E. McKenna

#WyrdAndWonder (belated) day 25 | Chosen one #TropeTuesday

I have surprisingly few books (that aren‘t older than I am) about prophesied heroes; but a goodly number featuring heroes picked by a god or patron. So let‘s hear it for Juliet McKenna‘s Green Man series, where carpenter and wild-blooded Dan Mackmain must try and right supernatural wrongs in the English countryside for the legendary Green Man. Folkloric fantasy with charm and shivers 🌳

#WyrdAndWonder (belated) day 18 | With friends like these… #TropeTuesday

While I was sorely tempted to yell BARUUUU I‘m going with the delightfully uncertain friendship of Kathe the Crow Lord from Melissa Caruso‘s The Defiant Heir. Is he really going to help a Raverran Falconer defeat a fellow Witchlord - and if so, what‘s his true motivation? I love this series unconditionally, and Kathe‘s ambiguity is definitely one of the joys.

#WyrdAndWonder day 4 | I never knew my father

For #TropeTuesday we‘re celebrating orphans, foundlings and secret heirs - for Michiko in Born to the Blade, it‘s her grandfather‘s identity that comes as a shock. I loved how her attitudes and priorities shifted through this series as she slowly embraced her unexpected inheritance. I still live on hope of a second season one day…
