Across the border, the Witch Lords of Vaskandar are preparing for war. But before an invasion can begin, the seventeen Witch Lords must convene at a rare gathering to decide a course of action. Lady Amalia Cornaro knows that this Conclave might be her only chance to smother the growing flames of war, and she is prepared to make any sacrifice if it means saving Raverra from destruction. Amalia and her bound fire warlock, Zaira, must go behind enemy lines, using every ounce of wit and cunning they have, to sway Vaskandar from war. If they fail, it will all come down to swords and fire. "Charming, intelligent, fast-moving, beautifully atmospheric. I couldn't put it down." - Genevieve Cogman, author of The Invisible Library "The best kind of fantasy." - Rosalyn Eves, author of Blood Rose Rebellion The Defiant Heir is the second novel in a spellbinding new fantasy series. #WyrdAndWonder (belated) day 18 | With friends like these… #TropeTuesday

While I was sorely tempted to yell BARUUUU I‘m going with the delightfully uncertain friendship of Kathe the Crow Lord from Melissa Caruso‘s The Defiant Heir. Is he really going to help a Raverran Falconer defeat a fellow Witchlord - and if so, what‘s his true motivation? I love this series unconditionally, and Kathe‘s ambiguity is definitely one of the joys.

Given my inability to walk without tripping over a perfectly flat surface, I guess I won‘t get to court any Vaskandran Witch Lords.

Mixed blessings, mind.

Love this series! I am a huge fantasy fan and I love the Venice and Swiss imagery in this book. I also love the main character Amalia. She strong, reflect, loyal, passionate and kind. The introduction of new characters, The Crow Lord and The Lady of Thorns is well done. There is more action in this second book and still lots of political intrigue! Can‘t wait for the 3rd one.

BookwormDownUnder I‘m thinking of trying some Fantasy. What‘s the name of the first? Would it be a good gateway book? Thx! 6y

50 pages in, and I have already yelled at the main character three times. So, just as much fun as the first book! Excellent fantasy with heaps of intrigue

This was somehow both fun and heart wenching. I really liked how Zaira and Amalia play off each other and highlight each other‘s strengths. #fantasy
