Pickpick

This one was intense. It seems the tension between Rhys, Catrin, the rest of the Welsh and King Edward may come to a head sooner or later, but seemingly sooner. There were a few times I thought Rhys and/or Catrin might lose their heads, along with about 1,000 bards. I couldn‘t help laughing at Rhys‘s use of his “husbandly authority” to get Catrin a bath and some sleep when he clearly would have preferred to go with her and get some sleep himself.

GingerAntics What an adventure. I can‘t wait for the next one. #SarahWoodbury #Bardd #WelshGuardSeries 1mo

I couldn‘t help laughing at this. It‘s just so Rhys (and oddly, Gareth as well). I imagined Rhys deciding to live vicariously through his wife during her nap after everyone had been up all night trying to keep an entire castle from going up in flames.

“So it is divine retribution, then. The Lord God thought to take Alfonso from me, as punishment for I know not what sins.”
Oh really, Eddie? You can‘t think of a single thing you‘ve done that might not be the greatest? I‘ll give you a minute to think. … Nothing? Innocent as a lamb, are ya?

I can‘t believe I didn‘t get an alert about this coming out in April (although I wasn‘t paying a lot of attention). I‘m so excited to have it now, though. I know what I‘ll be doing this weekend, now!
@Texreader it‘s not Rome or anything, but it is an adventure through history. I think everyone will have noses in this, though. lol

kspenmoll Looks like a great series! 1y
GingerAntics @kspenmoll it‘s different than the series that got @texreader and I into Sarah Woodbury, but I‘m quite enjoying it. 1y

I have finished these three books so far since the beginning of the #awesomeapril #readathon. I‘m so proud of myself. I have thoroughly enjoyed these three audiobooks, and I really like the stained glass style of the three covers. The cover art for this series is absolutely brilliant.

Andrew65 Great, this post is making me want to read these. 👏👏👏 3y
GingerAntics @Andrew65 this series is pretty good. I like her Gareth and Gwen series better, but this one is growing on me. 3y
Andrew65 @GingerAntics Thanks for that information, adding them to my list. 3y

Pickpick

This is officially the best book of this series so far. It brings the tiniest, seemingly insignificant things together from the previous two books and suddenly those things are so important. This story takes place mere weeks after the events of book 2, so it feels very rapid and almost urgent throughout. There is a maybe murder, and then a definitely murder, and you don‘t get any real hints until the final few chapters. 👇🏻👇🏻👇🏻

GingerAntics (Cont‘d) Good guys live. Bad guys die. Rhys, Catrin, and Justin start really coming together as a family. If you love Sarah Woodbury and/or the Welsh Guard Series, do yourself a favour and read this one immediately. Better yet, listen to the audiobook. Pure perfection. #SarahWoodbury #Paladin #WelshGuardSeries 3y
GingerAntics @Texreader I know you‘re not as much a fan of this series as you are of Gareth and Gwen, but this book is absolutely worth the read. The mystery of this one is just brilliant. I can‘t wait to read the latest Gareth and Gwen, knowing they had to be in progress about the same time. 3y
Texreader @GingerAntics It doesn‘t sound like I should read out of order? Or can I read it as a standalone? 3y
GingerAntics @Texreader well, you probably shouldn‘t because you‘d miss some of those little things that become big things, but at the same time, you‘re familiar with the world a bit more and plenty familiar with Sarah Woodbury. You probably could pull it off as a standalone. Although it happens so close on the heals of book 2, it might actually send you back to that one. You‘d miss the REALLY ODD way Rhys and Catrin end up married. King Edward is WEIRD!!! 3y

Paladin is rooted in historical fact:
three weeks
after King Edward's
Arthurian-esque
tournament
in
Nefyn, intended to celebrate his tri-
umphant conquest
of Wales,
his
eldest living son, Alfonso, died of an
unspecified illness. Always a healthy
child, unlike his elder brother Henry,
the death was unexpected and with-
out explanation, since he had already
survived the usual childhood dis-
eases that killed so many children
before the age of five.

GingerAntics (Cont‘d) His death is
recorded on August 19, 1284. King
Edward and Queen
Eleanor
didn't hear the news until three days after
Alfonso's death, on August 22nd, the day
they left Caernarfon with their retinue.
Thus, they did not attend the funeral at
Westminster Abbey, nor, in fact, change
their traveling plans whatsoever.
3y
GingerAntics (Cont‘d) With Alfonso's death, they were left
with five living daughters ... and baby
Edward, born in April at Caernarfon and
still on tour with his parents.
3y
GingerAntics (Cont‘d) History doesn't record that Edward
sent anyone
tO
investigate Alfonso's
death, but it is interesting to note that his
death was the last of the premature
deaths of Edward and Eleanor's children.
After two decades of tragedy, starting
with the death of their first daughter
twenty years earlier, every one of Edward
and Eleanor's six remaining children sur-
vived to adulthood.
3y
GingerAntics (Cont‘d) As a further note, as readers of my other
books will attest, I love tunnels. The one
used by Hugh and Miles still exists, hid-
den beneath a trap door in what is now
known as the Curfew Tower. #SarahWoodbury #Paladin #WelshGuardSeries

I‘m so excited to start this next audiobook, just as soon as I get some sleep. I haven‘t had the energy to actually look at words and interpret their meaning in quite a while, so I‘ve been plodding along with this book, just a few pages at a time since 8 January. With Tom Mumford narrating again, this promises to be a great audiobook, and much easier to handle right now.

batsy These sound fun! Never heard of this series before. Is it a good mix of history and mystery? 3y
GingerAntics @batsy it‘s mostly mystery, honestly. She mixes in historical stuff from wales. The mysteries are fun. This series is fairly new. The Gareth and Gwen Medieval Mysteries are even better (Gwen is just a stronger female character, but Gareth and Rhys are similar types of characters) and it has a bunch of books in it… 16 or 17 now I think? I highly recommend either. She also has two really good series about King Arthur. 3y
GingerAntics @batsy Sarah Woodbury is a GREAT author. I highly recommend the audiobooks unless you‘re familiar with the welsh language. She doesn‘t shy away from proper welsh names and the welsh place names. 3y
batsy Thank you! I'll look her up and the Gareth and Gwen series, as well. I'm just terrible at keeping up with a series, though. There's always other books to distract me, lol 3y
GingerAntics @batsy I can be that way, too. This is one of those authors that has managed to hold my attention. 3y
