Equal Rites | Terry Pratchett

My #currentread is perfect for #SuffragetteCity

On the Discworld men are wizards and women are witches but little Eskarina Smith is out to shatter Unseen University's glass ceiling and become the first female wizard... with a little help from Granny Weatherwax.

Sir Terry pointed out in a prior book that the reason men don't let women do things is because of how much better at it we're afraid they'll be.

CareBear I'm thinking of starting this series. I thought I saw somewhere that they don't necessarily need to be read in order...is that true? Do you have a recommendation on where to start? 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @CareBear I'm going in publication order but this link does a great job of breaking it down into the smaller storylines: https://www.google.com/amp/io9.gizmodo.com/how-to-read-terry-pratchetts-discworl... 7y
CareBear This is great, thanks so much! 7y

Laalaleighh @CareBear publication order! I've read them all and there's so much world building done in each book that pub order is the only way to go! 7y
Marchpane Sounds awesome and I love the pun in the title 👏👏 7y
CareBear Thanks @Laalaleighh I think that makes the most sense to my type A personality lol, glad to know that it works best that way! 😊 7y
readinginthedark I read The Color of Magic a while back and it didn't really grip me...wondering if I should start somewhere else in the series or just let it go. 😕 7y
Leniverse @readinginthedark I haven't read every single one, but I have read a great many of them, and The Colour of Magic didn't grip me either. The Light Fantastic was better, but not great. I love everything to do with the Watch and with DEATH. And many of the others. Give it a try. 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @readinginthedark Yeah, The Color of Magic is generally considered the weakest of them all. You can pretty clearly tell he's finding his writerly sea legs. 7y
readinginthedark Okay then, you guys have convinced me! @Leniverse @TobeyTheScavengerMonk (edited) 7y
Laalaleighh @readinginthedark the first two are the weakest in the series. If you wanted to start with equal rites, the third one, it wouldn't be the end of the world. Just know that you'll miss a bit of world building in the light fantastic but you'll eventually make it up as you read. 7y
readinginthedark @Laalaleighh Good to know, thanks! 7y
TobeyTheScavengerMonk @GatheringBooks This is pretty much a whole discussion thread about how Color of Magic is a rocky start. Maybe pick a different entry point? Discworld is too much fun to miss! 7y
GatheringBooks @TobeyTheScavengerMonk oh what a relief to hear that. we discussed colour of magic in our book club and most of us hated it - in fact we thought that if the manuscript was submitted blindly (without terry pratchett's name) to publishing houses now - that more likely than not it would be rejected for lack of comprehensibility 7y
