Mehso-so

This was not a book for me. I in general do not love books on motherhood (not being a mom myself). But I know some women who have had similar painful first years with their children and useless husbands. As always I want to know where her community is? She has no friends or family to help? This is such a terrible reality for so many women, it was painful to read here.

ChaoticMissAdventures I can see why some like this book. The writing is solid, the story for so many is relatable. But I honestly skimmed most of the book. I had zero interest in her long winded ramblings. And found the book to just be exhausting which might be the point since our narrator is also exhausted? I enjoyed the other struggling new mother story much more than this one - it was richer in symbolism I had more of a story to grasp into. 6mo
BarbaraBB Great review. I‘ve been surprised about how few people feel this way. I personally loved it but if you don‘t have kids I can‘t imagine NOT skimming it! 6mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @BarbaraBB I started skimming pretty much from the jump. I wouldn't have read it at all if it hadn't made the WP shortlist. I am genuinely surprised how few people had negative reactions to the book. I do think the last half of the book was more interesting than the first half. And it did have me make a date with a girlfriend who went through almost this exact new mom life. So I guess that is good. 6mo

BarbaraBB That‘s really good indeed. I pity your friend. I hope her husband is not as worthless as the one in the book! 6mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @BarbaraBB unfortunately he is. I think the extreme people see in this book is because they didn't have as useless of a partner or had other help. My friends husband, 10 years later and she is still married to him, luckily she convinced him to move closer to her support system so this last year when she was going through cancer I was able to get their kiddo to school each morning, and our other friend took care of after school and dinner. 6mo
BarbaraBB I am so sorry to hear that. He left her to take care of everything even when she was going through cancer? That is the worst. She must have felt so glad for having people like you around. 6mo

#WeeklyForecast
I am about 40 pgs away from completing Light/uncommon stars SO good!
I am listening to the tagged on audio, I wish my history classes were taught like this in school!
#BookGoal is to finish my last 2 #WomensPrizeForFiction short list reads they both look incredible but very heavy, if I can get through them next week will be much lighter reads.

"And she always came back to the same thing: she'd rather go on being a married woman, no matter how hollow the marriage was.
She was forty -five. The prime of life for a man, but on the downhill slope for a woman."

Yikes! As a happily divorced woman edging 45 this is harsh ? Picture with Serene because what would Dolly think with me and my cats! ?

ChaoticMissAdventures @BarbaraBB it is interesting, the main character isn't exactly likable but she is plucky. 7mo

This was a sneaky little bugger. Presents as a straightforward mystery but is really a heartbreaking portrait of a family suffering from addiction, poverty, abuse, and neglect. I could have easily read about them for another 200 pages. #womensprizeforfiction

charl08 Looking forward to picking this one up! 8mo
kbuggle Just finished this on audio, and wish I‘d read it in print.. it didn‘t translate as something I really enjoyed, but feel like it may have, if it hadn‘t been narrated. 8mo

Stone Blind: A Novel | Natalie Haynes

My favourite of Natalie Haynes‘ novels so far I think! I really love how many perspectives she writes from and how many mythological figures get to tell a fragment of the story. I also love how she goes very deep into choosing some characters few people have heard of, but it never stops me understanding the story. I really hope this gets through to the short list stage of the #womensprizeforfiction #womensprizeforfiction2023

Oh goodness this came up on my reading list at the wrong time.
This was the winner of the 2022 #WomensPrizeForFiction and it is well deserved. Complex but interesting and easy to follow storyline, deep creative characters, a look at mental illness that doesn't demonize. This is an excellent book. I am going to recommend it to many.
Unfortunately for me it hit me right in a sci/fi mood and it took me ages to get through.

Kristin_Reads This is next up for me… can‘t wait! 2y
