Counting the Cost | Jill Duggar

I went into this book thinking it might be a more personal deep dive into the hidden abuses revealed in the shiny happy people documentary. It was more about Jill talking about how uncomfortable it was to be on camera all the time, the double standard of how her brother was treated by her father versus how she was treated, and later financial abuse. I‘m glad Jill found her way out of the fundamentalist stranglehold, but I think she‘s still in⬇️

JenniferEgnor deconstruction, as so many of us are. It takes years of work and support from other people to fully get out of it. 1w

A Lack of Temperance | Anna Loan-Wilsey

A Lack of Temperance was my pick for #thematiccozies August travel theme because the main character is a traveling secretary! She goes to Arkansas to work for the head of the temperance society in this first book in the series. It was a little boring, but I‘d still try the next one!

julieclair I don‘t think I‘ve ever heard of a traveling secretary! 3w
mhillis Right? I thought it was an interesting idea for a character! @julieclair (edited) 3w

Read. This. Book. You won‘t be sorry. I LOVED it. Mattie Ross is the bomb!! Afterword by Donna Tartt hit my heart big time!! Great dialogue, 1870s Arkansas, Choctaw Nation. Epic retrospective novel. Will be reading more Portis.

JanuarieTimewalker13 8/6/25 Book 19. Re-read this one at some point! 2mo
marleed I own it and someday I will read it too! 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @marleed I can‘t wait to hear how you liked it!!! I put it off too long!! Just like I put off Lonesome Dove too long!! I hope the afterlife is filled with books bc I‘m never going to get to all of them!! 2mo

KathyWheeler I had seen the first movie a long time ago, but never saw the last one. I wasn‘t expecting the book to be so funny. I loved it. (edited) 2mo
JanuarieTimewalker13 @KathyWheeler yes!! I wish it had been required reading in my high school…I think it‘s a perfect match for freshman English!! 2mo
KathyWheeler @JanuarieTimewalker13 Yes — it would be perfect for that. 2mo

Remnants of the earlier seasons of Shameless and “The Night Always Comes.” It was engaging, but the third person POV felt like I was just watching Emily's story from afar, instead of being in her head. Dark, disappointing, and strange.

Ruth, a mother figure to Patty, emphatically tells her, “I love you now. I'll love you forever" and "Even if you forget everything else I want you to always remember that you are a person of value.”

BookmarkTavern That sounds lovely! Thanks for posting! 5mo
dabbe I loved teaching this book in middle school! Thanks for the memory! 💜💚💜 5mo
BooksandCoffee4Me @dabbe This was one where I broke down crying when Ruth was speaking to Patty, and my 7th-graders finished the reading for me. 💛 5mo
dabbe @BooksandCoffee4Me Aww, 7th graders are so sweet, aren't they? Most of the time anyway. 💜💚💜 5mo

Interesting. Not exactly what I expected, but overall a good story.
