I‘ve long wanted to read about the Irish taken into slavery in the Islamic world. So this book is perfect for #Ireland #foodandlit @Catsandbooks

This is a true story of corruption within the Baltimore Police Dept. When reading this, I can‘t say that I was really surprised. But, part of me wondered how a division could get away with so much…the lack of real oversight that was in place was ridiculous!

TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 1mo
Amiable FYI—there‘s a docuseries on HBO/MAX based on this book, if you‘re interested! 1mo
JoeMo @Amiable What???? Hell yeah!!! I don‘t have MAX right now, but this will definitely be on my list for when I switch some of my apps around! 1mo
Amiable @JoeMo Yes! It was produced by David Simon, too —so it has the same vibe and flow as “The Wire.” 1mo

A slow start to my reading year but I flew through this one super quick. I do just love Ann Tyler. This story of a dysfunctional family all impacted by each others anger or bitterness has a quiet vein of hope throughout. There are some lovely moments where each one (not all but most) finds a spot of peace, love or happiness within their grasp. I do wish we had seen more of the daughter Jenny though as that piece felt a little less resolved.

BarbaraBB And what a great view again 😍 2mo
Centique @BarbaraBB thank you Barbara 😘 Im back up in the Bay of Islands where we go each January for the last few years. Beautiful sunshine at the moment! ☀️ 2mo
Ruthiella This was my first Ann Tyler. My favorite (so far) is 2mo

LeahBergen Lovely review! Amazingly, I‘ve never read Tyler. 🤫 2mo
TrishB Great review and pic ♥️ 2mo
Centique @Ruthiella i havent read that one! Next time i want a Tyler read i will try it for sure 💕 2mo
KCofKaysville @Centique That was my first Anne Tyler and I liked it. I read several more! 2mo
Centique @LeahBergen you might like her i think! There‘s something a little similar in the ones ive read - messy dysfunctional families but an underlying belief in the human spirit - kind of an emotional pay off for me anyway 💕 2mo
Centique @TrishB thank you Trish 😘 2mo
Centique @KCofKaysville i think ive read four now 😊 More will surely follow. 2mo
CarolynM That looks beautiful. Hope you‘re having a wonderful time💕 I like Anne Tyler a lot too, I think she‘d be your cup of tea @LeahBergen My favourite is 2mo
LeahBergen @Centique @CarolynM Well, I‘m definitely going to have to try her now! 2mo
Reggie I‘ve never read her either. I keep seeing her book with the blue spool of thread. Also, lovely view. 2mo
Centique @Reggie definitely try her one day! I think this is a good one - characters to get mad at, characters to root for, nothings too tidy - if you liked Hello Beautiful i think you‘d like some Anne Tyler too. 2mo
Rissreadswithcats I liked this one too 2mo
Suet624 I believe they made a movie from this book that I watched decades ago. Is it that old? 2mo
Centique @Suet624 published in 1982 apparently. So you probably did! 2mo
Suet624 I just looked it up and I have it confused with another Tyler book, the accidental tourist. Geena Davis was in it. 2mo
Centique @Suet624 oh i remember that movie! It was good if i remember correctly. 2mo
Suet624 I remember enjoying it. 2mo

Mehso-so

Another so-so. I‘m not having outstanding audio listens lately. 😐 The MC in this one is difficult to like, though she has her reasons, and it felt like there were one too many threads in the storyline.

Susanita She‘s one of my go-to authors, but I just couldn‘t get into this one at all, despite multiple attempts. 4mo
Tamra @Susanita I can see why! 4mo

A teacher could use this book to introduce the history of the flag, and the symbolism within. Students could design their own flags after reading the story and discuss the symbolism behind their flags.
