Pickpick

My second Anne Tyler this month. I seem to be in the mood for well-written observations on normal life. Micah is a quiet, well-mannered IT expert/apartment block caretaker who maintains routines in his everyday life almost to the point of obsession, until events throw the routines off track. It‘s a gentle, character-driven short novel and I adored it.

TheEllieMo @sherrisilvera I read French Braid last year and thought it was so-so, but I‘ve really enjoyed both this one and Three Days In June, so I think I just can‘t have been in the right frame of mind last year. 6d

Mehso-so

The first of a series I‘d liked to try after @Bookwormjillk posted about it and I enjoyed another book by Laura Lippmann. I am not sure if I will continue though. So many characters in this book, I couldn‘t keep track. And the plot was, well, okayish I think.

Bookwormjillk It probably helps that I live 45 minutes from Baltimore. 7d
Susanita Yes, it‘s very Baltimore. The series gets more steady as Tess figures out what the heck she‘s doing as a PI. 7d

Just started this today. It reminds of an old school Sara Paretsky book. So happy to find a new to me series.

This was a good book but was too slow in some parts and I didn‘t love how the main character never seemed to learn.

A low pick for me. I haven‘t read the original and I‘ve only seen 10 Things I Hate About You once, so I suppose this is pretty close to Taming of the Shrew. Kate is certainly rude and standoffish at first and softens over time. Her sister is prickly too. Cute and short but probably won‘t read again. 3/5 or maybe 3.5/5.

A funny retelling of Shakespeare‘s Taming of the Shrew. Anne Tyler sets this novel in Maryland. Kate Battista feels stuck in life. She‘s been caring for her scientist father and younger sister, seemingly forever. Her father is researching autoimmune diseases and his brilliant assistant is about to be deported. Pytor must either reapply for a visa or marry to be eligible for a green card. Unusual characters and circumstances abound. 3.5/5⭐️

Almost the entire Irish village of Baltimore was taken captive by pirates in the early 1600s and sold as slaves in #Algeria. With little records about their lives as slaves, the author relies on a number of accounts by other slaves to try to describe what their lives could have been like. The author also posits a hypothesis that the taking was an elaborate plan of an evil mastermind who wanted to rid the coastal town of its inhabitants for his ⬇️

Texreader own reasons—and the hypothesis seems to make sense! I had heard about this historical event but I‘d never realized how many “northerners” from England, Iceland, etc were captured as slaves by Barbary pirates and not just sailors from captured boats, but hundreds of women and children. I also learned how the women may have had a better life as slaves than in the cold northern climes. Islam treated women more equally! A very interesting read for ⬇️ 4mo
