First off, the audible production (that I paid for) sucked! Midway through I found the audiobook with the suitcase available on audible plus, and it was better but definitely not exceptional. 😑 Still, nowhere near my favorite book by her. Low pick. One more #roll100 down!
Classic Tyler about a man who lost his son in a tragic incident and his rocky moves to reclaim his life.
Tyler turns 80 today. This was one of my very first hardbacks, purchased circa 1986. I was in college then and I must‘ve picked it up at a bargain table, as money was always tight. I devoured so much of her early work, then stopped after Breathing Lessons. I‘m not quite sure why, except my interests probably turned elsewhere.
A couple of charity shop finds. This will be my first Anne Tyler, but I see good things on Litsy.
Delightful and frequently very funny. Our protagonist Macon is a pedant and a grammar nazi with a "system" for everything from choosing a seat at the cinema to unloading the groceries and he and his equally loony family should by rights be insufferable, and it's testimony to Tyler's skill and humanity that we identify with them even as we laugh and wince at their foibles.
This is a quite strange book. Not that I didn't enjoy it, but I couldn't really figure out what was going on with the protagonist, Macon Leary. He hates travel, but he's a travel writer. He's set in his ways, but he ends up moving in with a younger woman he has little in common with.

No bingos for me in November, and that is okay. I just couldn‘t get into any audiobooks. Looking forward to December (and more Free Spaces on my bingo card!) 🤣📚

November has been a slow reading month for me...finishing up The Accidental Tourist in carline and pulling my December #bookspin list together.
I think I‘ve finally got Ann Tyler, I loved this. As with all of her books I‘ve read there‘s no great drama. However the characters were fantastic, I loved that whilst they could be thought dull and boring the story actually shows and develops their eccentricity and humour. It was a book I thought about and looked forward to reading all day. A perfect comfort read for my frazzled mind (although I have conflicting issues with the ending!)
Macon Leary is a lonely travel writer who hates both travel and anything out of the ordinary. Then he meets Muriel, a deliciously peculiar dog-obedience trainer who is full of life...

Macon Leary has lived a life of routine and loneliness. His marriage has unraveled following a tragic loss, and a new friendship with a dog-obedience trainer may be just the thing to send him down a new path. This book is full of humor and heaviness. Tyler is a master at writing about both the big and little things of life. Her characters are often eccentric, but feel real. The ending was not what I expected, but after reflection, it felt right.
Boys are playing in the sprinkler and Tyler‘s quirky characters are keeping me company 😁
My #bookspin and #doublespin books for June. Loving the travel theme I have with the titles! ☀️ Thanks @TheAromaofBooks for hosting the fun!
I picked these up tonight at the consignment shop. Have you read any of these? Lolita, I know, but the other two are new to me.
So today I worked at a Brotherhood of St Laurence for their store opening, face painting and making balloons for all the lovely customers.
Of course at the end of my 4 hour shift (after I hungrily eat a free sausage in bread from their BBQ stand) I shop in the book section and found these little beauties!
I am listening to Clock Dance by Anne Tyler atm & I've just recently read her Patchwork Planet so I'm on the hunt for more Tyler novels!!

Post a cover you love for 7 days, no explanation. Wanna play @GingerAntics ?
After rereading this engaging classic about the brazen dog trainer who rocked the lives of the overly rigid Leary family, I had to watch the movie again. Director Larry Kasdan loved the book so much, he met with author Anne Tyler who showed him all the places in Baltimore that she wrote about. And that‘s where many of the scenes were shot. The story reminds us that life isn‘t very much fun without change and a few surprises. 😊

I know I said I was not going to buy another book. I just could not resist. What's one more added to TBR pile?
Eh, it was ok, but in the book‘s defense I didn‘t really want to read it, so I knew I probably wouldn‘t be a huge fan, lol. I needed to read a book published in 1985 for Book Bingo and I‘ve never read anything by Anne Tyler, so I figured I would give it a shot. It wasn‘t terrible or anything, and it was well written, but wasn‘t really my thing, either. *shrug*

I went through a huge Anne Tyler phase years ago and this is the only book that has managed to remain on my shelves. Ironically, it's my least favorite Tyler book.
"...he saw now how such couples evolved. They were not, as he'd always supposed, the result of some ludicrous lack of perception, but had come together for reasons that the rest of the world would never guess." #junebookbugs #smugmarrieds
Looks like I'm not the only one who is likely to look at their kindle library and think, "I #dontrememberbuyingthis."
I may not be able to say exactly which library book sale or thrift shop every book on my physical shelves came from, but I'll have a general idea. Whereas the kindle sales slip things into my kindle library, only to be found later, and wondered at... ????♀️⁉️

"There's a trick to everything. That's how you get through life." Reading my very first Anne Tyler, finally, and enjoying it--because of lines like these.
Interesting story of grief and loneliness, OCD and unexpected relationships.
I don't think it's fair that this book has to follow Station Eleven. I can't remember the last time I finished a book and wished it were longer. Station Eleven was beauuuutifully written and left me with so many feelings.
On to Anne Tyler! I've wanted to try something of hers for a while and The Accidental Tourist was a #dailykindledeal last month. I'm cautiously optimistic about this one.
Just purchased this ebook. I recognized the name from the movie adaptation, which I've never watched.😳
I signed up to get daily emails of e-book deals. I got this one today 🤗 this was my homerun book from high school that kick started my love of reading! I may have to revisit this book 😍
great sale today on one of my favorite Anne Tyler books 👍👍😀
A heartfelt story about a man coping with the death of his young son & the struggles in coming to terms with it. Thanks to his & his family's eccentricities, you will chuckle as well as tear up. Tender, quirky, & a joy to read. Pair with: S. Pelligrino Sparkling Water, chilled, with lemon wedges.
Can't believe it took me so long to get to this Anne Tyler.
