3/5
During Lebanon civil war, Zeina and her brother wait for her parents to come back from visiting their grandmother. As the bombing grows in intensity, we are waiting with them & their neighbors. Tension is palpable, past events are shared, allowing us to get a little more acquainted with the neighbors.
Some illustrations worked well to express the tension. But the book shortness makes it harder to create a deep connection with the characters.

vivastory mention favorites by MM (note: MM has no U titles): Stars Are Projectors*Heart Cooks Brain*Interstate 8*Parting of the Sensory*Missed the Boat.
MM has been a fave for 25 yrs. I have seen MM live 3x. The first 2 times were technically back-to-back concerts that they played in Fayetteville, My BF at the time & I drove from KC to Fayetteville, attended both concerts & then drove back to KC the same day. Ah, youth. Thanks for the memories, Jeremiah.

vivastory @TheBookHippie It really is. 45, I had no idea he was basically the same age as me. I have been following the band for a long time now. Just absolutely terrible. 2y

Wonderfully done graphic novel about Beirut during the Lebanese Civil War and it‘s impact on a family and their neighbors.

This was a lovely book…I felt like I was having a private conversation with a friend where I learned about her life story. This is a simpler, quieter novel than Alameddine‘s The Hakawati, but it‘s a solid book in its own right. This will appeal especially to introverted literature lovers!

Props to @vivastory who have me the extra motivation to finally read this.

I Remember Beirut | Zeina Abirached
post image
Mehso-so

Zeina Abirached recounts some anecdotes about her life in Beirut, Lebanon during the civil war between Christians and Muslims.
While I liked her drawing style, the content feels more like a list of anecdotes without much, if any, explanation about the nature of the conflict.

This was a soft pick for me. It‘s very reminiscent of Persepolis in that it‘s a graphic memoir told from the perspective of a child set in wartime in the Middle East (Lebanon) with black & white illustrations heavy on the blacks & very 2d. I didn‘t find that the story had the power of Persepolis, or that I learned something new about Lebanon or about wartime, but I did really enjoy the cast of characters & appreciated the atmosphere of the story.
