What I mostly liked about this story is that it was very straightforward, even though there are quite a few jumps in the timeline.
István‘s life was a hot mess and I ate this up in less than 48 hours!

Promising start but I felt like it lost momentum and really lacked originality. I can‘t see how this is on the Booker short list? I was glad it was short

This novel is a bit like a more serious, more introspective, and more sprawling When Harry Met Sally, but saying that doesn't remotely convey the scope of Desai's story, which includes commentary about and criticism of at least four countries, the art world, journalism, and the nature of familial and romantic ties. Her characters are silly, maddening, and so relatable, and I love that they engage in productive introspection without therapy.
#BookerShortList has been announced. The good news is I have read 4.25 of the 6 and have Stone Yard Devotional on its way. The bad news is I have to finish Creation Lake and My Friends did not make the list. Glad to see James and The Safekeep on the list.
I'm a little late on this, but just had to say -- this book was fantastic!! A five-star read for sure (and I almost never give five stars). Funny and frustrating, it reminded me a little of reading Paul Beatty's satire. I'm not sure how I've managed to not read Percival Everett before, but I definitely need to remedy that! #bookershortlist
LOVED this book❣️ Interconnected stories that complete a beautiful circle ⭕️ Following mostly woman of color, some straight, some LGBTQIA each with a unique voice and story that makes for a memorable reading experience. Rooting for this #BookerShortList 🏆5 shiny🌟🌟🌟 🌟🌟
Wow. Sweeping, great characters, great ideas. Just wow. I did not love the ending, but each character gets their own end. Some are hopeful, some not so much. This was my first by Powers, I will definitely have to read more of his work. #bookershortlist #bookerlonglist
This book was OK, but I don‘t know why it was long- or short-listed for the Booker Prize. The story is narrated by Romy Hall, serving a life sentence for murder. She reminisces about her wild childhood in SF, working at The Mars Room, and her son. She describes life in prison and the people there. Best parts for me were the descriptions of places in CA despite errors. I also did not love The Flamethrowers, it too was meh. #bookershortlist
Finally starting a #bookershortlist book! Approximately an 8-week library queue for this one.
