A murder mystery with amazing female characters and great writing. Immensely entertaining and unputdownable. It's the first book in a series, the second one will come out this year.

Parable of the Sower | Octavia E. Butler

I haven't read Kindred yet but when ever I think about Octavia Butler, I remember the Parable books. The thing that's fascinating is how it was written a while ago, and yet seems to be almost talking about today. In some aspects, I found that frightening! Make America great again is in this book!!

ShyBookOwl Oh! I have the first book but haven't read it yet. Her books can be heavy so I think I need to really settle in for it. Thanks for playing 😊📚🏐 9mo
QueenJen @ShyBookOwl The first book by her I ever read was Fledgling. I was sad to learn that it wasn't a series, then I found the dystopian series. It's amazing how different her books are from each other!! And really good! 😉📚 9mo
ShyBookOwl They are. The first one I read was Dawn (book 1 of Lillith's Brood). It turned me on to science fiction and speculative fiction, so it kind of changed my life in the best way. 9mo
QueenJen @ShyBookOwl I just bought that one! Might have to bump it up on the list. 9mo
ShyBookOwl @QueenJen yay! I hope you enjoy it! 9mo

Kindred | Octavia Butler

Heard a game of Book Volley on What Should I Read Next?, and thought I'd try to get one going here 😊

1. Kindred
2. Since I'm kicking this off, I chose Kindred, my all time fave. Time travel is used to explore the horrors of slavery through the eyes of a contemporary narrator. So surreal! Powerful, thoughtful and strange.
3. What beloved books does Kindred make you think of? Remember to tag your pick to keep the volley going 😊📚🏐
