I don‘t know why I left this on my tbr for so long. It‘s fantastic!! Adraa and Jatin start as betrothed royals, whose competitive natures make them rivals. Through partnering up - under secret hero names - they like these parts of themselves. It was so funny to watch them fall for each other in this way. The tension and banter was so well written. The deception by the end a good addition to this action romance.

This was unexpectedly AMAZING! It‘s a tight psychological thriller with a out of nowhere ending! Highly recommend!

The Wicked Cometh | Laura Carlin
Panpan

Laura Carlin‘s debut novel is a gothic historical thriller that effectively recreates the squalor of the 1830s but relies heavily on credibility-defying contrivance to drive the plot. The romance between Hester and Rebekah doesn‘t convince due to its ‘insta love‘ beginnings and the failure of either woman to question it in the context of the period. Ultimately this just wasn‘t for me and I can‘t say I‘d rush to read Carlin‘s other work.

A grief-filled ghost story, set during WWI, which might be especially hard for anyone who has been pregnant or is a parent.

This isn‘t *just* a ghost story (they never are). It‘s a tale about who is believed, when, & why. The author boldly delves into themes of class, gender, & mental health (without skirting anachronism). There‘s lots of gray area (particularly regarding trust & morality), which is exactly as liminal as a ghost story should be.

monalyisha My one complaint is that the author never returns to the inscription from Gerald in Stella‘s book! Did she forget to tie up that thread? Otherwise, this was an aching, haunting story that I didn‘t find scary…just horribly sad. Frank sets herself up for this to be a series and though it‘s far weightier than serial literature tends to be, I hope she‘s able to continue. I would certainly read (listen to) more. The audio is a very British pleasure. 1y

I have one more book I‘m hustling to finish before the official end of #Scarathlon2022! It‘s been my audio-listen for my commute and I‘ve got about an hour left.

Very pretty picture (not mine!) from Laura Patricia Rose (link cred in comments).

Over the last year, I have received so many cards, letters, and notes from my lovely #LitsyLove friends. Your words helped me heal, grow stronger, and not to feel so alone. I am slowly working on responding to everyone. My poor Mail Lady looked shocked when I handed her the first batch! 😂✍️😵‍💫😄

It‘s been a long time since I‘ve read a decent ghost story that made me want to sleep with the lights on! Set in an old Manor House in 1917, this is a creepy, gothic thriller with lots of atmosphere and mystery. I‘d recommend to fans of Stacey Halls, Laura Purcell and Michelle Paver.
(The second half was overly long which took the edge off the suspense - where are all the editors?!! still a cracking good read though!).

TrishB And a gorgeous cover! 2y
