Cutting Edge | Jeffery Deaver
post image
Mehso-so

Although the information about the diamond industry was very interesting, Deaver threw entirely too many balls into the air in this story, and introducing his arch enemy at the end was a tired trope intended to sell the next book. Vimal Lahore, a young apprentice who yearns for another life was an interesting character. Generally, unlike many of Deaver‘s others, this one was too long, and disappointing.

A lawyer by day-and then only when he's forced to take on new cases-Andy Carpenter's true passion is the Tara Foundation, the dog rescue organization he runs with his friend Willie Miller. When Willie calls him to say the alarm has gone off at the foundation building, they find a stolen rescue dog …standing right next to a dead body. An Andy Carpenter mystery.

Another cover with a half-headed woman. I know this trend has been going on for almost a decade but I still take umbrage at the sight of these hidden, faceless, half-faced women. A way to render women silent?

2017: Open letter to the faceless 20 yr old on book covers:

Ruthiella I think what someone else suggested is more likely: if the face isn‘t recognizable, you might not have to pay the model as much for the photo. 3y
kspenmoll @Ruthiella Thanks for info. So the trend started for financial/practical reasons. Yuk. (edited) 3y

I finished this all in one day—such fun! The main character, Hero, is trying to settle into her new house and blend in at her new school, when she finds out about a local/historical mystery she sets out to solve. There‘s a bit of mystery, a bit of Shakespeare, a bit of history, some wonderful characters along the way, and a satisfying conclusion to it all. Really enjoyed this one.
