Two royal envoys, Calarian and Benji, are on a quest to help the duke of Tournel with a mountain troll problem. What could possibly go wrong? Well, the duke goes splat! The "new" duke is the first "idiot" the two elfs meet, Lars Melker the cowherd. And that sets the wheels in motion which might lead to a dictatorship or the first constitutional dukedom in Aguillon.
Add in their mutual attraction to Lars and emotions might happen, as well as ?️
I just LOVE this book but my girl shannon HAS to stop getting pregnant and get me the next book!
10/10 would recommend!! 💗 💗 💗 💗

In the country of Aguillon, in a town near the mountains, where two elves try to help the just appointed new duke (former cow-herd) with a mountain troll problem.
Funny, queer, D&D like, adventure story with 🌶️

Themes: Christmas Noir Mystery (but satire), Over the top humor, Fantasy
This was a quirky read, I enjoyed it but it wouldn‘t need to be a yearly re-read. It really made me want to re-watch every Christmas movie it referenced, and there were a lot mentioned!
I actually liked this book. The story is written for middle grade- but as the characters in the story age i do wish the voice of the story aged also - so that is my main critique. In this one there are serious injuries that require healing. I think i would have liked more of the other characters in the story too- but i did enjoy the direction this book took.

I really wanted to like this. It is beautifully written, but nothing ever seems to happen. I finally decided to DNF at about the half-way point.
I just don't do well with magical realism.
I was genuinely so upset when Kisten was brutally murdered that I threw the book across the room and donated the entire series to a thrift shop (I had the cool covers too - so some regret there) and just never went back… but somehow remained subscribed to the authors enewsletter… maybe I should revisit?
