“Memory —by its very nature unreliable—is what allows us to retroactively create the blueprints of our lives, because it is often impossible to make sense of our lives when we‘re inside them, when the narratives are still unfolding.”

Hauntingly beautiful, with a “just-right” ending…🩵🩵🩵

Shelf sort read ! 2 girls born on the same day in a small New Hampshire hospital whose situations couldn‘t be less alike . Ruth longs to pursue art & adventure. She takes for granted her grounded family rooted to a farm for generations. Dana is born to a couple of drifters & dreamers, feeling often she‘s more of the adult than her parents. She is grounded in reality & science.born in 1950, get caught up in the times , think Woodstock & Vietnam.

#AboutABook #FromTBRList this shelf project is going to take a LONG time. My TBR pile has been pretty stagnant too!🙄So after doing 2 shelves , culling a duplicate, moving some to another location to be by the rest by an author,I said I liked Maynard‘s Labor Day & this is the book after that one. Then WHAT ? This book has been on a shelf since 2010? It‘s next ! Sheesh

MommyWantsToReadHerBook Ooh, I loved Labor Day - let me know if this one is worth it! 3mo

Perfect summer read even though it takes place during fall and winter holidays. Lucy is a politician‘s assistant and has been in politics all her life. Alice was permanently “damaged” in a tragic accident in their teens and has been Lucy‘s responsibility since. After Alice‘s death, Lucy is forced to return to the home town she hates in order to receive any inheritance. But, the process gives her many insights.

I heard this novel being reviewed glowingly on an Australian radio book show and added it to my long #tbr list. Written in 2011, but set mainly in the 1920s & 30s, it is a beautifully written, rural family saga about horse jumping. It felt a little Grapes of Wrath to me 🤔. I thoroughly appreciated (rather than enjoyed) this harrowing, affecting #ozfiction.

Hooked_on_books Sounds good! But I have to say it drives me crazy when the author‘s name is SO much larger than the title. At least make them the same size! 6mo

HISTORICAL FICTION - DRAMA

What a heartwarming, cozy, feel good read.....a sweet, nostalgic book...but with all good things there usually are regrets, heartbreak, and secrets.

You will be surprised at who/what the “good daughters” turn out to be and will also learn some fun agricultural facts about fruits and vegetables.

If you liked The Glass Castle, you will like this as well.

Mehso-so

• family drama • family secrets • contemporary fiction • 2.5 Stars Meh 🫤

This novel weaves together the lives of three generations of women.
• Gina Zoberski: The protagonist, an optimist who runs a gourmet grilled cheese food truck.
• Lorraine: Gina‘s fastidious mother, who catalogues all her faults.
• May: Gina‘s sullen teenage daughter.
⬇️

suvata Gina strives to make it through each day despite her mother‘s critical nature and her daughter‘s rebellion. Her relentless optimism sometimes annoys both Lorraine and May. When Lorraine suffers a sudden stroke, Gina discovers a family secret that Lorraine has kept hidden for forty years. As her mother‘s health deteriorates and her daughter rebels, Gina embarks on a journey to uncover the truth. 8mo

I‘m a longtime fan of Chamberlain‘s— though since discovering her novels over a decade ago, I‘ve tried to ration out her backlog! It‘s hard to believe this one is 23 years old— other than some technology, it has a surprisingly current feel. When Janine‘s daughter doesn‘t make it home from the Brownie camping trip that already deepened the wedge between her and her parents and ex, she‘s determined to bring her home. Gripping, though predictable.

Sitting outside in the relative morning cool I finally finished this beautiful story. I think part of me didn‘t want it to end . Having read her biography first shed a different light on this book for me I think. Knowing what I know about her life and way way too early death , even her acknowledgments made me tear up. I‘m about to search out 2 of her previous books.

Jeg Thank you @MrsMalaprop . 9mo
CarolynM Such a good book. So sad that she is no longer with us. I found a copy The Mint Lawn soon after I read this one, but somehow I‘ve never got around to reading it. One day… 9mo
