Sunrise Over Fallujah | Walter Dean Myers

Alaska Battle of the Books High School list for 2024-2025. I am on maternity leave this semester, but I will help a bit when I‘m back in January before the battles. I am working on Sunrise over Falluja. I‘ve read Old Man and the Sea and Fighter in the Velvet gloves before.

I am enjoying Robin‘s fresh voice. It‘s almost weird to hear the youth in the voice of an Iraq War soldier since this invasion happened when I was in 5th grade. I think Meyers‘ portrayal of the confusion and lack of knowing even in the soldiers rings true.

A reread of a classic kid‘s picture book published in 1961. If only the worlds leaders would read it .
Beautifully written and illustrated a gentle reminder of the beauty and peace in the world.
. “At height of Cold War , a young couple produced a new kind of book for children .
It confronts the folly of war and the threat to the environment.”

4 ⭐This book is wonderful. It is fiction, but it is based on true events. It‘s based on the war in Syria and families that chose to stay. The children collected books from the bombed-out buildings and created their own library. It‘s sad that stories like this exist but it‘s through books that we lose our ignorance. This book was wonderful, the illustrations match and, I‘m glad the story exists even though I wish it didn‘t

I felt this was a very quick read that mildly hints at the topics of war and trauma. The illustrations are sepia-toned, which gave the book a bit of a unique feel for me. That's what drew me in initially. I feel like much is alluded to and the reader can draw their own conclusions. But it wasn't done in a way that you'd feel lost as you read. If something can be both subtle and obvious, I think this book pulls that off well.

Daisey I pretty much auto buy new Korman books for my class library, but I‘ve yet to read this one. After this review, I may need to move it up the TBR list. 7mo

Yesterday after the library book sale, I did over Vinnies in Cessnock. Love a cheap linen tea towel. Some op shops charge too much but these were only $2. Their prices in general were all over the place!

Jeg Nice haul. We are finding prices the same over here. A lot depends here on what suburb the Vinnies is in! You certainly find interesting useful things. 8mo

My Goodwill book haul today! $13 for all of these babies! I‘m a huge DS fan (obviously) and collect all of her books. I‘ve never read The Da Vinci Code but I know it‘s wildly popular. Picked up my first Karin Slaughter, and the tagged book was too intriguing to pass up. It‘s about the psychology behind training soldiers to kill when we grow up learning that murder is wrong.

Ruthiella Nice haul! 👍 12mo

A poet and band leader in Kharkiv, Ukraine. On February 24, 2022, as Russia began to invade Ukraine, immediately intending to take or siege Kharkiv, he started posting encouraging posts on Facebook. And he kept going. This book is his Facebook journal. It's a positive boost of energy, but one can feel the war come, and ebb, and stall.

This is a powerful document of a city in war, and not yet taken.
