After seeing a review of her trilogy of novels recently, I became curious about Kristóf‘s writing. I was not able to find the novels at my library but found her memoir.

This is a very short read, but spoke to me in so many levels. In this book, and through short vignettes, she talks about what it felt like to emigrate to Switzerland as a refugee, learning French and publishing all her work in a language she had to learn from scratch.

Loved!

Gleefulreader This sounds wonderful! Stacking! 1mo

Another book that took me longer to finish than it should have. These are older stories as Csath was writing in the early 1900s. The stories themselves were quite oppressive. Csath was an opium addict who eventually murdered his wife before committing suicide and many of his stories reflect the noise in his head. CW for animal abuse, etc. One of the few Europa that wasn‘t really for me. #europacollective

A book first published in 1987 that got a new edition with a lovely cover and illustrations.
Hungarian folklore meets Tolkien's world. A lovely fairy tale that I'll definitely read to my kids one day.

Beautiful adaption with Helen Mirren! Streaming on Amazon.

I appreciate the complicated & raw relationship between the two women.

The Case Worker | Gyorgy Konrad

This book was a trip. The narrator is a social worker who mostly works with children (I think). I enjoyed this behind-the-scenes look, the disjointed nature of the narrator‘s thoughts. Social work, work with the public in general, can you leave you feeling jaded and cynical, and maybe even a little deadened to things that should shock you. I look forward to reading more by Konrad. 241/1,001 #1001Books

BarbaraBB I loved all three of the Konrad books on the list. Especially 10mo
AshleyHoss820 @BarbaraBB That is so good to hear!! I‘m excited to read it! Thank you! ☺️ 10mo

Jari-chan @starlight97 I've not met many Hungarians here, so I couldn't resist 🤭🇭🇺 1y
RaeLovesToRead Aww, kitty stretch! 🥰 1y
starlight97 @Jari-chan where are you from?😁 1y
Jari-chan @starlight97 Switzerland 😁 which part of Hungary are you from? 1y
Chrissyreadit @Jari-chan did you grow up in Switzerland? @starlight97 what genre do you like to read? I am of Hungarian descent but do not know many books that have been translated to English to give me a flavor of Hungary. 1y
starlight97 @Jari-chan so how do you know Hungarian? 😅 I'm from the Great Plain, currently live in Baja by the river Danube, near the Serbian border 😊 1y
starlight97 @Chrissyreadit I read mostly anything except romance 😄 there are some great books that have been translated to English, I can recommend the works of Magda Szabó for example 😊 1y
Jari-chan @Chrissyreadit Yes, I'm about 100% Swiss 😅 @starlight97 I've spent a year in Hungary. Also some months in Szeged 😊 1y
Chrissyreadit I have stacked The Door, and am curious as well as ignorant about genres- so many books i see from Eastern Europe are more serious- but i feel like i rarely see more light (Like Jane Austen‘s) or fantasy - are there good options of those genres through a Hungarian lens that you know of? Also what is a popular children‘s book? 1y
starlight97 @Jari-chan ah I see! Did you like it? 😊 1y
starlight97 @Chrissyreadit there are some Hungarian authors who write sci-fi and fantasy under pseudonyms, like Brandon Hackett, Leslie L. Lawrence or Vavyan Fable. I'm not really up to date with children's books but some I loved as a kid were by István Csukás, Veronika Marék, Éva Janikovszky or Zoltán Zelk. I'm not sure if these were ever translated though. 1y
Chrissyreadit ❤️ that‘s great for me to look up though- thank you. my Father was very proud of being Hungarian but i only know a tiny bit. 1y
Jari-chan @starlight97 Yes, of course! I get homesick for Hungary pretty often ☺️ 1y
starlight97 @Chrissyreadit you're welcome! 🇭🇺 1y
