#BookReport
I finished The Door this week as I was hoping ... and to be honest I still don‘t even know what to think about it!!! 🤨
Moving on to Ohio and so far it‘s dark for sure, but I am impressed by the perspective that Markley has chosen to write from. I think it has promise!

MicheleinPhilly I really loved Ohio. Can‘t wait to hear what you think. 1mo
BarbaraBB You make The Door sound really intriguing. I have it on my TBR shelves as well 1mo
sisilia I loved The Door😍 Ali Smith‘s Introduction helps to make sense of the message 1mo
emilyhaldi Good point!! @sisilia I need to go back and read the intro now that ive finished the book to see if that makes more sense of it 🙃 1mo

My #weeklyforecast is pretty simple this week-
I'm about halfway through the tagged book and would love to finish by next Sunday. In the meantime, hoping to get started on Ohio for #booked2019 #bookaboutaddiction 🙃

Cinfhen Very doable!!! I own Ohio, so curious to hear your thoughts!! 1mo
ljuliel Dear Cinfhen , If you own Ohio , we have a pothole on our street that needs attention and our neighbor‘s tree roots are blocking the rainwater when we get hard rains. Is there any way you can look into this for us ? I know we are a small town, but we pay taxes too. Thank you. 😁 1mo
BarbaraBB Beautiful picture! I have a copy of The Door too, so am looking forward to your thoughts! 1mo

Cinfhen Hahahahaha!!!! Hilarious @ljuliel I‘ll send a crew out your way but only as a Litsy friend & family courtesy 1mo
Cinfhen Thanks for the tag @BarbaraBB xx 1mo
ljuliel One of the times I read the comments before looking at the photo. I sorta figured you didn‘t own our state or I probably would have heard about it before this. 😊. Just joking. I WOULD appreciate someone repairing the above items. We‘ve asked the city workers and it hasn‘t been done yet so I thought I‘d go over their heads to the owner of the state. 😁. @Cinfhen 1mo
Reviewsbylola I still need to read Ohio too! 1mo
Mdargusch I really disliked The Door. I believe it caused me to drink @BarbaraBB 🥃 it‘s dark. 1mo

This book would make a great horror movie. Emerence lives to make others dependent on her and when they disappoint, the revenge is twisted and cruel. Emerence is very contradictory - she loves animals, but beats them and imprisons them. A hard read, but I couldn't put it down till I found out what was hidden behind Emerence's last door. Shudder.

Next to Brad Thor in the right hand bottom corner is my copy of Magda Szabo's The Door. This is the first time that I give away a book that I liked😉, the first time I leave a book in a little free library and the first time I write a short note to whoever picks the book. AND I did not take anything 🙄

What a strange little book. I neither could relate to the narrator nor Emerence but was drawn into their story centering on their weird relationship and power games.

The Door | Magda Szabo

Even as I spoke I was thinking that I had never believed those nineteenth-century novelists who compared a character's face to a lake. Now, as so often before, I felt ashamed to have dared question the classics. Emerence's face resembled nothing so much as a calm, unruffled, early-morning mirror of water.

I think I would have read this differently if I were younger- that we are meant to idolize Emerence, the enigmatic caretaker at the center of the novel, just as the narrator does, along with the entire town. In effect, this would justify the narrator's crushing guilt at what transpires. But I think examining that guilt, when its object is a figure who dispensed devotion and cruelty in roughly equal measure, is the real purpose. 👇

Billypar There are no literal parent-child relationships in The Door, but I think Szabo wanted us to view that relationship (and its inherent dysfunctions) with some objectivity. The difference between old world and modern beliefs and responsibilities in such a relationship are on display, but rendered in a chilling way. In such a landscape as Szabo paints, you make moral judgments of the characters at your own peril. This will stick with me. 1y
GatheringBooks i read this two years back and am still haunted by it 1y
Billypar @GatheringBooks I can see that- definitely a book that haunts. 1y

I hated Emerence and didn‘t see how there was any kind of friendship on either side. I would, in fact, call Emerence a crazy old b**** - seriously crazy. She had temper tantrums that she took out on everyone around her, including the narrator‘s dog, Viola. Not sure why Viola liked Emerence so much, when Emerence periodically beat Viola for no reason to do with the dog. Though the book was pretty slow-moving, it did pick up a bit toward the end.

The story, which is limited to one street and its inhabitants, is the story about friendship between an unusual housekeeper, who is very mysterious about her past (and with unusual approach to the life), and the writer who is after years of publishing ban again successful, but above all, this is a story about mysteries of human connections, personal priorities and sacrifices in the name of friendship. #backpackEurope

I was drawn in immediately and read this quickly. A Hungarian writer reflects on the oddly intense relationship she develops with her secretive, moody housekeeper. The housekeeper, Emerence, is a fabulous character: a bit rough and odd, with a cynical view of the world that I really responded to. She has some great monologues.

This was selected for my office book club by my Hungarian coworker. Looking forward to hearing his take on it ☺

For some strange reason, parts of this book reminded me of "The Remains of the Day" by Kazuo Ishiguro. However it has a much higher creep and weirdness factor, which is always good as far as I'm concerned. I enjoyed reading about the life of this old Hungarian cleaning lady, and one particular part of the book had me ugly cry.

I‘m reading through this book at night for my #LMPBC read. It‘s good but definitely not something I would‘ve picked up on my own. It‘s dark and a pretty heavy read. I‘m curious to know where exactly it‘s going. Not really sure of the plot so far at about 100 pages in.

cathysaid This seemed to be less about plot and more about character studies. It is dark and heavy, though I found some passages to be lyrical. Discovered if I read in 30 page chunks I would absorb more. 2y

cathysaid I appreciate the efforts! This one gets mixed reviews on Litsy. It's not my favorite NYRB edition but at the same time, some of those passages were just masterfully written. So. This book. I'm still mulling it over. Dark yet lyrical. Occasionally witty. By no means an "easy" read, but one that makes some astute, sometimes uncomfortable, observations about human behavior. Overall, I enjoyed it (but I'm also one of those odd people that enjoys Russian literature). I tried to create a photo that better reflects what I can't easily put into words.

Read for #LMPBC , so it's headed your way next week, @IheartYA !

ItsAngel @cathysaid I will definitely give my true thoughts. I‘m in another postal book club, and sadly the last book I got was not for me at all. I tried to read it but didn‘t like anything about how it was written. I bailed. 🤷🏼‍♀️ That is exactly what I wrote in the journal. 2y

I need to read more in French and this looks like an interesting mystery to get back into it with. #door #🚪 #emojinov17 @RealLifeReading

AmyG It's very good. 2y
Lcsmcat @AmyG Good to know! Did you read it in French or some other translation, or do you read Hungarian? 2y
AmyG I read it in English....which sadly, is the only language I can read and understand. (edited) 2y

Lindy I recommend the French edition—La cote 400—of (edited) 2y
Lindy Also, the French edition of 2y
Lcsmcat @Lindy Thanks, I‘ll look for those. Where do you get your French language books? I tend to use Powell‘s, but I‘m always looking for new sources. 2y
Lindy @Lcsmcat I get French books from the public library. 2y
Lindy @Lcsmcat Do you go to Powell‘s in person or online? If you live in Portland, there‘s a French collection at the library. ie: https://multcolib.org/français 2y
Lcsmcat @Lindy Alas, I have never been to Powell‘s in person. When we lived in Salt Lake I could get French books from the library, but Wake County Library doesn‘t have that kind of collection. 🙁 2y
Lindy @Lcsmcat Maybe you can get your local library to bring in specific titles on interlibrary loan? 2y

Wonderful, fascinating book but I have to admit I was a bit relieved to finish it - so intense!

Mehso-so

This was between a so-so and a pan for me. I‘ve been thinking about how to review it since last night. Neither main character was sympathetic to me. I️ might have enjoyed it more had I️ understood more of Hungarian history (obviously not the fault of the author). Also, I️ can‘t be sure but the translation seems stilted to me. Hard to tell if that‘s translation or style. Pic of my current teacher lunch.

heikemarie I️ should add, I️ really don‘t do well with “hateable” characters. 2y

I only have three days to finish this one 😱#raceagainstautocheckin

Unrelatedly, the picture is because I am traveling to Grand Rapids MI for a conference next Monday and Tuesday. Any Littens want to meet up and go to Founder‘s? Any good bookshop recs?

Reading this to start a lazy Sunday. My atheist heart rejoices at this description of Christianity 😂 I‘ve heard good things about this book but right now it‘s a bit of a slow start.

It's so hard to capture the richness of the characters & relationships in this book! Emerence just comes across as bitter, but she's so complex & mysterious!

tricours Love this book! 2y
UrsulaMonarch @tricours yeah!! So glad my book club chose it - I'd been meaning to read it for forever, but this provided the crucial impetus for me! ☺️ 2y

Here are three more possibilities as my choice for #LMPBC . What do you think @Mdargusch @ItsAngel @IheartYA ? Have any of you read these? I'm leaning toward either The Door or Stoner. Stoner would be a reread for me but it's been several years so I would certainly still enjoy it. Other books are tagged below. I swear I'll decide after feedback on this one! 😁

Tamra I don‘t get a vote, but one is GREAT and one is good. 😂😉 2y

cathysaid @Tamra Let me guess... Stoner is great and The Door is good? 🤔😜 2y
Tamra @cathysaid 🤣🤣 Broken record. 2y
Mdargusch Stoner is my choice from this group. 2y
ItsAngel I am good with either The Door or The Stoner, but lean a little more towards The Door. 2y
cathysaid @ItsAngel Thanks! 2y
IheartYA I'm leaning towards the Door. Lol 2y
