This is the most complicated case of radicalization, groupthink and a cultish following I‘ve ever heard of. The social psychology involved to create a community of over 1,000 and have them all die for the cause is beyond evil. The Jonestown Massacre may go down in history as the most atrocious murder-suicide this world has ever seen.

For #ReadingTheAmericas2023 #Guyana I chose this biography written by a survivor of Jonestown. This was by far one of the most interesting and heartbreaking reads I‘ve read this year. She points out warning signs she saw and explains how someone can get so caught up in a cult they don‘t see it. @BarbaraBB @Librarybelle

Librarybelle This sounds very interesting! 2y
BarbaraBB I want to read about Jonestown too for Guyana 2y

#2021Book48
The thing I liked best about this particular cult-related book was the focus on the victims and survivors. Scheeres didn't demonize the people who fell under Jim Jones's spell, but instead worked to understand why they chose to leave everything behind and follow him to the jungle of Guyana. Every story has more than one side, and Scheeres did a great job digging into every side of the Jonestown mass-murder/suicide.

Who was it who said that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely? Whoever it was, the quote fits Jones to a T. Reiterman‘s cautionary tale covers it all: from the humble beginnings in Indianapolis through to the tragic denouement in Jonestown. By no means an easy read but lots of lessons to be learned, the main one being: never put your trust in a psychopath with feet of clay.

It probably sounds creepy, but I am interested in any story of Jonestown. I was young when it happened, but it left an impression on me.

This was a very emotional listen. My heart aches for Ms. Layton. One take away (paraphrased)- People do not join a cult. They join a church or an organization or a political movement.

It's easy to point fingers and call people weak or stupid, but all humans want to feel like they belong somewhere. Anywhere.

Hestapleton Have you read the tagged book? It really helped me see why people were so drawn to Jones and his mission! It started as a great thing, but just had a narcissistic and controlling leader. 4y
Sace @Hestapleton I haven't read it yet but it is somewhere on my shelves. I listened to A Thousand Lives and it was also good. I usually have to take long breaks between books about Jonestown. 4y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Reiterman, a journalist with the San Francisco Examiner, was injured during the Port Kaituma airstrip ambush. Four years after the Jonestown mass-murder/suicide, he published this detailed account of the childhood, rise, and demise of Jim Jones. As with all cults, the Peoples Temple followers intrigue me most. Fascinating and truly devastating.

Megabooks Oh wow! He was there! 5y
Sace I'm also fascinated by this moment in history. 5y
Sace Aaaaand apparently I have this on kindle. (You know you have a book problem when you forget what you own 🙄) 5y

britt_brooke @Sace 😆 This has happened to me once or twice. 5y
Sace @britt_brooke kindle is the worst. At least with physical books I sort of have a memory of physically putting it somewhere. 5y
Cathythoughts I‘m scared & I‘m stacking 5y
britt_brooke @Sace Yes! You‘re 100% right. I honestly have no clue what all is on my kindle anymore. 🤦🏼‍♀️ 5y
AlaMich This book is one of a very few that completely burrowed its way into my brain and never left. It‘s excellent. 5y
britt_brooke @Cathythoughts The whole story is so fascinating, but the ending is so horrific and quite detailed. 5y
Cathythoughts Thankyou ! I‘ll take that into consideration.... I‘m drawn to it ... you are always so good for replying, Thankyou 👍🏻 5y
britt_brooke @Cathythoughts Happy to! 🤗 5y
Cathythoughts And that‘s the Litsy spirit I love X 5y
JonathanConrad @britt_brooke Ok, so...I watched the Jim Jones documentary series on Sundance, and felt so stinkin heavy afterwards. Do you have any idea if the book would still be a good addition to this story? I am definitely engrossed but also just feel so heavy and sad. 5y
britt_brooke @JonathanConrad I haven‘t watched the series, but I completely get the heavy feeling. This was my 4th book about it, but spaced out over time. It‘s a lot of repeat information. If you decide to read about it, I recommend this one or 5y
Suet624 I‘m curious about the title. Do you know what it refers to? 4y
britt_brooke @Suet624 I‘m glad you asked: it‘s a reference to his shiny black hair. 4y
Suet624 I thought that might be it. But no one called him that, right? 4y
britt_brooke @Suet624 That‘s correct. People mostly called him “father.” Creepy. 4y

▶️🎧 It‘s been a while since I‘ve read a cult story. This is my 4th about Jonestown, the others: The Road to Jonestown, Seductive Poison, and A Thousand Lives. Jones was both horrifying and fascinating, though the followers interest me most.

#cults

Megabooks If you can get ahold of the older show from National Geographic called The Final Report, that episode is one of my fav TV shows about Jonestown. I‘ve only read one book (Road), but I‘ve watched a few docs. It‘s definitely interesting. 5y
britt_brooke @Megabooks I‘ll have to look for that - thanks! 5y
CallMeIshmael This is scary considering current events 5y

CallMeIshmael Also I don‘t recommend diving that deep because there is actual audio of the last day at Jonestown...it still bothers me 5y
britt_brooke @CallMeIshmael Yikes. I don‘t think I could handle the audio. The photos are enough to make one sick. 5y

#papadontpreach #MOvember @Cinfhen

Jim Jones was the first cult leader I learned about in school, and was my first idea for this prompt although I couldn't remember his name at the beginning. (I had to Google 'cult leader who killed members using poisoned juice')
