Pickpick

I loved everything about this book (my fourth #manbookerinternational2018 one) apart from the section that was just ANOTHER narrative about a misunderstood male ‘artiste‘ who has to cheat on his wife because she‘s ‘mediocre‘ and doesn‘t get him. I don‘t need to read that plot again. But that was only part of it and I loved all the description, the ideas, the connections between things. A great book overall. That‘s Spain done for #litworld2018gb

Simona I was between so-so and pick ... still thinking about odd structure, and how incoherent this novel is, but the part about killer was excellent! 7y
GatheringBooks i first learned about molina through alameddine‘s book (tagged here) and i am determined to know more of his novels - i am linking this post up here so you can be eligible for book prizes https://gatheringbooks.org/april-june-2018-linky/ 7y

Very excited to be reading my next #manbookerinternational2018 book! Only a few pages in but loving this one already. Also (less excitingly for me) announcing that I‘m officially putting myself on a book buying ban for one calendar month. My spending has got crazy recently and I have to force myself to save some money - so I‘m seeing if books will make a difference!

MicheleinPhilly You‘ll probably be shocked to see how much of a difference not buying books makes. 😬 7y
BlameJennyJane I‘m considering doing the same thing. It‘s gotten really bad. I‘m a therapist so when a client says something like “hoarding” or “drinking too much” I realized if I insert “buying books” then I have a problem too. 😂 7y

I read this book for ages having no idea what a mashrabiya balcony was and why everyone was so excited by them and so now I know !
Love the things you learn about when reading about other countries.

3/6 on #manbookerinternational2018 and South Korea for #litworld2018gb #readingaroundtheworld !

I absolutely adored this book. I think it suited me personally best of all the booker ones so far but I don‘t know if I‘d say it was better than Frankenstein in Baghdad or not, I think that was a better done book in some ways just not very me. Hmm not sure. Both books amazing tho

I really enjoyed this book! I liked it more than Flights which was the only other #manbookerinternational2018 book I‘ve read so far. The writing and the translation were both amazing and I adored the concept and all the characters. Maybe if I‘m honest I didn‘t follow the plot as well towards the end as at the beginning, so not completely perfect, but I loved it. And that‘s an Iraqi book (my first ever!) for #litworld2018gb #readaroundtheworld

GatheringBooks woohoo! perfect pick! glad that you have joined our literary voyage!! :) 7y
Sophoclessweetheart Oh! So glad to hear this is good! 7y
Simona Well, we agree on this one! It‘s better than Flights 😘 7y

This book does this to me all the time - takes you right up to a reveal and then diverts away from it for pages and pages !

What‘s in the dark hole !!!

AceOnRoam I'm not there yet! Yes, this author loves to keep you waiting. What chapter are you up to now? 7y

Redheadrambles @AceOnRoam just made it to Chapt 9 and now a lot more things are explained well some things ! I have accepted it‘s not all going to make sense until the end 7y
AceOnRoam Ok I'm just about there too... 7y
ClairesReads Still on chapter 5- but excited to catch up! 7y
AceOnRoam So many characters in such a small book 😐 7y
Redheadrambles @AceOnRoam yeah I was struggling with that until about this point where it is starting to feel more comfortable 7y
Redwritinghood Intriguing! I‘m just starting chapter 7. It‘s a little late here, but I‘m hoping to make a little more progress tonight. 7y
mklong @AceOnRoam I thought the same thing, but I‘m finally starting to get them straight. Still not sure all these people are necessary though 🤔 7y
Neale #AceOnRoam #Redheadrambles #ClaireReads Might be a bit late now but second time through I made a list of characters and was amazed at the difference it made. :) 7y
Redheadrambles @Neale I found the character list quite helpful ( also I think you have you might need to replace # with @AceOnRoam @ClairesReads 😀 to get their attention! ). 7y
Neale Oh yeah, hehe thanks. :) 7y

#bookhaul from yesterday‘s #litsylondonmeetup!! Went to several bookshops I‘d never known existed and I got a bit carried away... well I NEEDED all of these cause the top two are authors I‘m hearing speak at the south bank centre in July and the bottom is the last one I needed from the #manbookerinternational2018 shortlist. So they were essential purchases really 😇

Emilymdxn @LMJenkins I love hearing other people loved a book before I started it! I‘m really excited as I don‘t know anything about this author but I‘ve heard good things 7y

Finally finished! So 1/6 on the #manbookerinternational2018 shortlist, and also Poland for #litworld2018gb!

I really enjoyed this and thought it was beautifully written, incredibly quotable, really original. I‘ve never read a book structured in barely-connected vignettes like this and I found it really interesting. Maybe I found bits of it a bit grizzly if I‘m honest, but I did enjoy it.

Simona This one is at the end of favorites in my list from this year ... It seems that our reading tastes runs in exactly the opposite directions ... 7y
