The English Patient
The English Patient | Michael Ondaatje
With ravishing beauty and unsettling intelligence, Michael Ondaatje's Booker Prize-winning novel traces the intersection of four damaged lives in an Italian villa at the end of World War II. Hana, the exhausted nurse; the maimed thief, Caravaggio; the wary sapper, Kip: each is haunted by the riddle of the English patient, the nameless, burned man who lies in an upstairs room and whose memories of passion, betrayal, and rescue illuminates this book like flashes of heat lightening. From the Hardcover edition.

I have been on a reading slump lately. I have started many good books but just wasn‘t feeling any of them. Hopefully this one gets me out of my slump. It is in the 70s right now so windows are open.

A book I read more or less unplanned. But how lucky I got! This definitely is a highlight this month and maybe even in 2019. That beautiful language caught me and didn't let me go again.

Buechersuechtling Cool, that it still has its fans. I saw the film when it came to the cinemas – and was so impressed that I of course needed to read the book immediately. But it left me disappointed hugely . Since then I‘m through with “The English Patient”. 🤷🏽‍♀️ 4mo
Jari-chan @Buechersuechtling I didn't watch the film and I guess I won't ever. Or maybe only in a couple of years. Right now I have the feeling it would destroy to much for me. I'm happy to hear that you were impressed by the movie even though the book wasn't for you. 😊 4mo

Lots of bookclub and challenge reads this month...

The English Patient was my favorite new to me book.... ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
I also thoroughly enjoyed my two audio re-reads for bookclubs with The Wife and The Song of Achilles..... I like to re-read anything in a new format, and both of these on audio were fantastic 💕

This post-war set novel has a beautiful sense of place, and the poetic writing is dense but so lyrical and sensual.
4 damaged people share a crumbling Tuscan villa- Kip, a Sikh sapper, Caravaggio the thief and Army nurse Hana caring for the mysterious ‘English‘ patient. The story floats between their time together and the memories and heartbreak of their pasts.
No page-turner, but I savored every moment with the gorgeous prose.

The sappers haven‘t gone in there yet to clear it. The Germans retreated burying and installing mines as they went. A terrible place for a hospital. The smell of the dead is the worst. We need a good snowfall to clean up this country. We need ravens.”

This was the time in her life that she fell upon books as the only door out of her cell. They became half her world. She sat at the night table, hunched over, reading of the young boy in India who learned to memorize diverse jewels and objects on a tray, tossed from teacher to teacher - those who taught him dialect who taught him memory those who taught him to escape the hypnotic.

Country 56: Okay, I lied. I'm back in Italy again, for the 5th time, so I can use this week's *travel hub* to fly to Azerbaijan. Though I had planned to fly home from Spain, I couldn't resist the chance to go for the last few countries!
I visited Capri (Blue Grotto, beach club) and Positano (including Montepertuso restaurants!) like I did on my honeymoon.
Book was very nice - lovely prose but very sad. 4/5

The final curtain is closing on the Second World War and in an abandoned Italian village Hana, a nurse, tends to her remaining patient. Rescued from a burning plane, the anonymous Englishman is damaged beyond recognition and haunted by painful memories. The only clue Hana has to unlocking his past is the one thing he clung on to through the fire- a copy of The Histories by Herodotus, covered with hand-written notes detailing a tragic love affair.

This movie is so beautiful. I knew I would just love the book.
I didn‘t.
It‘s over-written (is that a thing?), full of shifts in time and POV with no heads up, and is actually quite boring.
Summary: clavicle notch, bomb diagnostics, Herodotus, staring into middle distance. 😴

TrishB Great review 😁 1y
pgh.femme That is definitely a thing. 1y
Stephanie-Anne Yes — such a gorgeous film, such an over-written, boring and unfocused book (though I kinda love it for the beautiful language). My summary: winds, maps, sand, morphine. 1y

Honoured to have been in the audience to see Michael Ondaatje awarded the #manbookergoldenprize !! One of the best books I‘ve read recently for definite. He gave a beautiful speech about all the wonderful novels which don‘t get remembered or awarded prizes like the booker. The only one I remember right now was Sam Selvin‘s the lonely Londoners, which I intend to read immediately

Aimeesue Wow! I love that he mentioned Pym, and Munro, and Trevor, horribly overlooked, all of them (edited) 1y
