This *finally* came in from the library, but I've procrastinated on it, and it's due back tomorrow! Guess I'd better get reading this morning, because I'm halfway through now! #leafyandliberal #thatswhyittook3monthsforthebooktocomein #massachusettsmap

Laalaleighh Is it bad that I know exactly what you mean by Massachusetts map and leafy and liberal 😂 I lived in The Hub of the Universe for two years and that map is so spot on. 7y
LauraBeth You can read this one in a day or two 😀 7y
Audrey This book infuriated me. It's filled with white obliviousness. I still get ranty thinking about it. I also live in the most opinionated zip code: 02138. 7y

Pinkmeghan @Laalaleighh yessss!!!🙌 7y
Pinkmeghan @LauraBeth I'm making some headway, I have to keep stopping to check on work or bang my head against a brick wall lol! 7y
Pinkmeghan @Audrey yep, it's infuriating. I'm basically continuing to read it because I think this is an opening salvo of a political career, and I want to know what crap he's spouting. 7y
Audrey His analysis at the end is so intellectually lazy. Be aware so your head doesn't pop off. I saw red, I was so angry. 7y
LauraBeth Agree that this books has a lot of problems @Pinkmeghan and @Audrey. Too much anecdotal "evidence" as his research. It could have worked as just a memoir (and I'm wondering if that's how Ron Howard will arrange it to fit a screenplay). I'm a liberal living in Georgia - so I'm a much hated unicorn here - but I wanted to read this to see if it could provide insight into regional culture and how it shapes political values but it didn't do that. 7y
Pinkmeghan Omg @LauraBeth @audrey I'm almost to the end and holy crow, the bullshit is just piling up. This is absolutely his first step for political office. And this terrifies me 7y
Audrey @LauraBeth I really resent that it was marketed to explain the trump phenomenon. While Vance's local was different then most memoirs, his story wasn't original. He seemed to think he was the only who grew up poor and became successful. (edited) 7y
Audrey @Pinkmeghan I wonder where he will run. Doesn't he live and work in Silicon Valley? He gave an interview in my local paper recently where he commented that he didn't realize that poor people of color also grew up in circumstances similar or worse then him. Really, that's a surprise? And, he still didn't realize that with his white privilege, he didn't have to worry about being shot by law enforcement. Ugh, I'm annoyed all over again. 7y
LauraBeth @Pinkmeghan and @audrey I'm reading 👆right now - it may be of interest 7y
Pinkmeghan Thanks @LauraBeth I'll check it out! @audrey he just made the news (via a NYT piece *he* wrote all about "why he's moving home." Tl;dr he's going to "live" in Columbus and obvs run from Ohio, but he's also taken a job in DC bc his wife is clerking for Justice Roberts (obvs right?). 7y
Pinkmeghan @Audrey I was so angry when I read the book partially because he was so convinced his experience as a "poor white boy" was unique. I grew up in South Boston, and I recognized so many of the people I grew up around in the story. Yet I'm a "liberal elite" bc I live in New England? 7y
ReadingSusan @LauraBeth omg! Another unicorn!! We are so rare here! 7y
