Imagine Me Gone | Adam Haslett

Pickpick

Just a stunning book on living with family members who have mental health illnesses. The chapters alternate perspectives between the mother, father, and three children over decades. The way the characters think and feel and communicate, it all felt realistic. Another book I would have passed on if it weren't for the #nba2016ficlonglist. Hard to believe I only have three books to go before I complete the longlist!

Spent the past day in Ohio and on my drive there and back I listened to book 5 of my #nba2016ficlonglist. It's about a woman married to a complete sociopath and she has a baby with him. when the baby's born she starts hearing this steady stream voice. She leaves her husband, but he goes to great lengths to get her back for his political campaign. then things get very, very weird. about the end times and the interconnectedness of living things

Nuwanda That's one of the next on my list! 8y
8little_paws @Nuwanda it's something else that's for sure. I feel like I need a study group to help me understand everything in this book. 8y
LectricSheep O whoa what. That sounds bonkers. I'm kind of intrigued! 8y

8little_paws @LectricSheep bonkers is putting it lightly. I think this might be the weirdest book I've ever read and I'm reading Geek Love right now for comparison ;) 8y
LectricSheep Okay, so I've heard amazing things about Geek Love, but it also sounds really dark-- one of those books that just makes you wish you weren't human anymore. Is that accurate-- and is this book like that too? 8y
8little_paws @LectricSheep Geek Love is very, very dark and depressing. This book isn't quite as depressing for me at least but it does heavily feature a sociopath hunting down his wife and child to literally no end which is super creepy. 8y
LectricSheep Thanks for the info! Yeah, I think I have to pass on Geek Love, at least for the moment-- and maybe this one too. Sometimes I just don't feel like weeping over the state of the world. 🙃 8y

Well wasn't this surprising! Book 4 of my #nba2016ficlonglist challenge, this is about four guys who get together annually to reenact the 1985 football play that ended Joe Theissman's career. But it's not about football. It's about how 22 guys who have this ritual but aren't really close friends otherwise all interact. It's quite funny in parts. Not my favorite for the NBA, but I'll admit I enjoyed this read.

LilMamaMastro I'd read/watch anything about ending Joe Theissman's career! Oh, that makes me sound really heartless but, well, COWBOYS forever!😳🏈 8y
8little_paws @LilMamaMastro I listened to this on audio and thought the narration was good. Got it through Hoopla, if your library offers that app. 8y

The audiobook I'm listening to also fits for #booktober books with text only covers. This is book 4 of 10 for my mini reading challenge to read all of the #nba2016ficlonglist!

specificity I like the football part in this book, not the men's part...lol 8y
8little_paws @specificity I'm enjoying it more than I'd thought I would. The author has made me laugh out loud more than once. 8y
Sarahsbookshelves Such an underrated book!!! 8y

The Portable Veblen: A Novel | Elizabeth Mckenzie

Pickpick

#HelloOctober This was an odd one. Paul and Veblen get engaged, but quickly the reader can tell that these two aren't cut out for a healthy relationship. There's a lot in here about Big Pharma, our materialistic culture, dysfunctional families. And talking to squirrels, which I think is supposed to represent the anti-materialistic. I'm thrown on how to rank it , but for Litsy purposes I'm going to give it a pick for it's originality.

8little_paws Also this is book 3 of the ten I'm reading for the #nba2016ficlonglist and I feel the first two I've read, Association of Small Bombs and The Underground Railroad, are both more worthy of moving to short list. 8y

Going to start this tonight, this very cold and blustery evening. It's one of the #nba2016ficlonglist choices, the third one for me so far. I am hoping that I read enough of Into the Black tonight to clear my palate after A Gentleman In Moscow! needed some nonfiction before I could approach another novel.

Here's another #reconmendsday post. This book is so short but there's so, so much to process. The author gets you in the headspace of a terrorist bomber as he analyzes the chain reaction that a marketplace bomb causes in India. It's also one of the @NationalBook fiction longlist picks--I plan on reading all ten. #nba2016ficlonglist
