Repost for @BarbaraJean

I‘ve had this on my shelf for a long time & I‘d really like to tackle it this year! Is anyone interested in a buddy read?

It‘s a trilogy of historical novels set in 14th-c Norway, originally published in 1920, 1921 & 1922. These would work well for anyone finishing the #192025 challenge this year. I‘m planning to use the first 2 books for 1920 &1921.

Let @BarbaraJean know if you would like to join.

Librarybelle A great reposting! This buddy read is organized by @BarbaraJean , so let Barbara know if you are interested. 20h

I was thinking May—July or June—August, one book per month. Comment if you‘re interested!

Ruthiella I would be interested! I have an ebook copy and have been meaning to read it for a while now. 2d
Deblovestoread I‘d be interested! It is such a chunkster I‘m not sure I could do a book a month but I‘m willing to try 😂 2d
Andrea313 I'd give it a try starting in June! 2d

Daisey I also have this on my TBR and have been thinking I need a readalong to get me started on it. I‘d probably prefer starting in June to work better around some other long reads I hope to fit in. 2d
quietjenn Yes! I was just thinking of this today, oddly enough. 2d
Librarybelle I‘d be interested! 2d
LeahBergen It‘s so good! 1d
lauraisntwilder Yes! This has literally been on my nightstand for over a year. 1d
MeganAnn I finished book 1 at the beginning of the year and have plans to eventually tackle the rest of the book before the end of the year. I‘d love to join in for books 2 & 3 when you get to them. Book 1 was very good. 1d
MaureenMc I‘m interested! Been meaning to read this one for a while. 1d
Amiable This was my #chunksterchallenge read a few years ago! 22h
Gleefulreader I‘d be interested! 19h
AmyG I have read the first 2…and need to read the third. I‘d love to join in. 17h
BarbaraJean @Ruthiella @Andrea313 @Daisey @quietjenn @Librarybelle @lauraisntwilder @MaureenMc @Gleefulreader 🎉Yay! We‘ll start in June, then! I‘m thinking one general discussion/book & probably a few other posts along the way. @Deblovestoread It should work out to just under 100 pages/week—that sounds maybe doable 😂 @MeganAnn @AmyG Would love to have you join! I can tag you once we get to your non-read books, or for the whole thing, whichever you prefer. (edited) 14h
Librarybelle Sounds good to me! 14h
BarbaraJean @LeahBergen @Amiable I‘ve heard such good things about it for so long—it‘s time to finally read it! 14h
Amiable @BarbaraJean I mean … it‘s better than “Clarissa.” 😖😀 14h
BarbaraJean @Amiable 😂😂That‘s definitely “damning with faint praise”!! One of my college professors (who‘s a medievalist) highly recommended it and her taste *usually* aligns with mine—we‘ll see! 14h
Amiable @BarbaraJean There was a long stretch in the middle that I had to push myself through. And some of the main character‘s choices irritated me. But I would definitely recommend it as a worthwhile read. (edited) 14h
Ruthiella Awesome! 👍 11h
BarbaraJean @Amiable Makes sense, and it's good to know that the middle might end up being a bit of a slog. Glad to hear you found it worthwhile overall! 10h

Pickpick

Mattis knows he isn‘t a good worker and that he isn‘t quite as smart as everyone else but it still bothers him that his neighbors all refer to him as Simple Simon. Still he has the birds he loves to watch and his sister who endlessly knits to keep them both fed. However when a stranger arrives Mattis‘s life feels more uncertain. A lovely book about an unforgettable character.

Mehso-so

The beginning of this year has seen me continuing my journey through small press and translated fiction. This is the story of a Norwegian girl who goes on a school semester in Australia where she ends up living in a renovated brewery with another girl. The brewery has only thin walls and the borders between the girls and sound and reality blur. While it was an interesting exploration of intimacy and loneliness it didn‘t fully work for me.

Pickpick

Kristin Lavransdatter was a #roll100 pick for December so I decided I would read book 1: The Wreath. Didn‘t quite finish it before the end of the year, but I did finish it yesterday.

This was lovely! Kristin is a strong heroine who struggles to balance love & obedience to her family & God with her own desires for her life. I was captivated by this portrait of medieval Norway. I also found some of Kristin‘s internal conflict to be true to life. ⬇️

MeganAnn As someone who was raised Catholic, the internal struggle to reconcile your desires as a young woman with the things you are told are wrong can be difficult to navigate; the author captured that authentically. Also as someone who has Scandinavian ancestors, the look into the medieval Norwegian family life was very intriguing. I could picture these characters as family. My grandfather was of 100% Norwegian heritage & my grandmother is half Swedish. 2mo
MeganAnn I will likely continue on with book 2: The Wife at some point later this year. For now, I‘m taking a break to focus on #auldlangspine titles. 2mo

Started this book yesterday and I'm hoping it's a nice, cozy winter read. It does seem like it could be the perfect book for a winter read. I'm also absolutely obsessed with this beautiful bookmark I got for Christmas 😍.
