Lizpixie I am so glad I live in Australia! Our waiting lists for elective surgery may be long, but at least there's no out of pocket expenses. Every Australian citizen gets a Medicare card which entitles them to free healthcare. When you have prexisting conditions like I do, it's a godsend. Though even here, getting in to see a specialist will cost you on the day, but Medicare gives you back I think it's 70% of the fee? 7y

Lizpixie And if you can't afford a specialist consult, you can go to an emergency room of any hospital, see a doctor there & get a referral to an in hospital specialist which is covered by Medicare.I see a Professor who specialises in Pain Management in the Pain Clinic of my local hospital for nothing & can get my script for gabapentin(which costs about $50 at a drugstore) for $5 at the hospital pharmacy. If I saw him in his private rooms I'd pay over $500 7y
Cathythoughts Yes @Lizpixie we have a similar system here in Ireland. It's only right. My husband had to go to hospital in Australia a few years ago , while we were there, and the care was second to none. He had a major operation & no charge ! I think there is some agreement between our countries 👍👍👍 7y
