Always Remember | Cece Meng
post image
Pickpick

Seeing as there are just two days left of #picturebookmonth, I ought to make a better effort! Today's book is possibly my all-time favorite PB on death and grief. It gracefully covers death in old age (with a tear-jerker opening on the scale of the movie Up) and focuses on how loved ones will live on in our memories and deeds long after they're here. The gorgeous illustrations match the beautiful message. Not to miss for children or adults.

Count the Monkeys | Mac Barnett

Pickpick

I totally slacked on #picturebookmonth over the weekend. Ah well, but back again today with my all-time favorite preschool read-aloud (another Mac Barnett book takes the cake for my fave school-age read-aloud). Count the Monkeys counts everything BUT monkeys, and if you plan the ending just right, it drives kids nuts. Pretty hilarious. Fantastic book for a participatory audience, too.

Ron's Big Mission | Don Tate, Rose Blue, Corinne J. Naden

Pickpick

Based on the childhood of astronaut Ron McNair, Ron's Big Mission tells the story of an avid reader with the dream to fly growing up in the Jim Crow South. Ron isn't allowed to have a library card solely based on the color of his skin, and one day he decides that he is going to take a stand and change that. Literally. I haven't found a single child or adult who doesn't love this book. #picturebookmonth

Littens, I am already burnt out on holiday reading, but THIS BOOK. I am crylaughing. Mrs. Claus serves sprouts on Xmas Eve before the big ride, and Santa passes them along to Rudolph. What ensues are THE BEST farting euphemisms, reindeer laughs, and noxious clouds ever. CRYLAUGHING.

Thunder Rose | Jerdine Nolen, Kadir Nelson

Metal-working, bull-taming, storm-wrassling Rose was born with a kind heart and the know-how to get a job done. I have a soft spot for Wild West tall tales, and this hits the spot beautifully. That it features an African American #childprotagonist and is illustrated by Kadir Nelson makes me all 😍😍😍

Say what?! A picture book about evolution? Sign me up! Children are encouraged to interact and identify the long ago relatives of familiar animals. The text is simple, the pictures colorful and clear, and the book provides a bunch of extra information about evolution at the end (including correcting common errors). 🤘#picturebookmonth

Hanukkah Moon | Deborah Da Costa

Pickpick

Aunt Luisa has just moved to America from Mexico. Isobel is spending the weekend with her, but she is a little confused about the Mexican Hanukkah customs. This is a great book that peesents a blend of cultures and facilitates children to broaden their worldview. #picturebookmonth

If You Plant a Seed | Kadir Nelson
post image

If you plant a tomato seed, a carrot seed, and a cabbage seed, in time, with love and care, tomato, carrot, and cabbage plants will grow.

If you plant a seed of selfishness, in a very short time, it will grow, and grow, and grow into a heap of trouble.

But if you plant a seed of kindness, in almost no time at all, the fruits of kindness will grow, and grow, and grow, and they are very, very sweet.
