Ron's Big Mission is an RF book by Rose Blue,Corine Naden, and illustrated by Don Tate. The story is about a boy named Ron.He had a dream of becoming a pilot, but first, he had to overcome the obstacle in his way.Ron decided to go to the library and takes some planes book; however, when Ron was 9, only white people could check out books from the library. But Ron was having none of that; he decided he would get a library card and take the books home.

StephanyNunez The story teaches about standing for yourself, making a difference, and fighting for what is right. The story is based on the true story of Ron MacNair, a hero whose dream came true. He became an astronaut; however, he lost his life when the space shuttle Challenger exploded on January 28, 1986. Ron's Big Mission is great for read-aloud (RA). 3y
StephanyNunez This strategy uses UDL principle 2.3 (Clarify vocabulary and symbols.) The UDL connects with RA because when doing an effective RA, the teacher must teach key vocabulary. I like how at the end of this book it has an “Authors Note” page that gives real information on the pilot.

This is a great HF story about Ron McNair. Ron wanted to check out books in the library but couldn't because of his skin color. He eventually gained enough courage to stand up and fight for what's right. Ron later went on to become an astronaut! This book would be great for a S! ESOL strategy 8 and UDL principle 5.2 can be used for this book.

ha_kaye This would be a great book to introduce segregation and the Civil Rights Movement to students. Also, the story sounds very inspiring (: 5y
Mmw2478 I love your resource for this book! Good one for the classroom. 5y
DrSpalding Ron Mcnair is a real person. Therefore this would be considered…? 5y

A great HF about Ron McNair‘s struggle with segregation in his younger years while trying to discover more about his love for flying, written by Rose Blue & Corinne J. Naden and illustrated by Don Tate. Definitely a good RA or IR for lower elementary grades that introduces segregation and could be a great idea for Black History Month activities. #LAE3414sp19

melindamcmullen84 https://www.rif.org/literacy-central/book/rons-big-mission This is a great site for lesson plans and resources! UDL 3.1 & 3.2 (supplying background knowledge & highlighting big ideas and relationships) and ESOL 15 & 16 (reinforce key ideas & speaking, listening & writing activities) align great with these plans! DrSpalding He is a real person. That means this would not be historical fiction but what? 5y

This book is really impactful. I remember being told to read this to my class during BHM and wondering if this was appropriate for 4 year olds. Well the next day I got called into my daycare directors office and got in trouble. On my students did realize that she was Black, and her parents said “they weren‘t going to tell her till she was older” Regardless of that specific experience, I think this book is fantastic. This B book is about Ron, a

Ryanne.H Young child who is growing up during in 1959. There is a law that doesn‘t allow African Americans to check out library books and Ron becomes determined to desegregate his library, and achieve his dream of reading at home. This is such an impactful story that I would use it as a RA so discussion can occur after key points. UDL 3.1, 3.2, and 8.1 & ESOL 26, 28, and 29 #UCFLAE3414SP18 6y

Based on the childhood of astronaut Ron McNair, Ron's Big Mission tells the story of an avid reader with the dream to fly growing up in the Jim Crow South. Ron isn't allowed to have a library card solely based on the color of his skin, and one day he decides that he is going to take a stand and change that. Literally. I haven't found a single child or adult who doesn't love this book. #picturebookmonth
