So I have the second book and I reread this so I could read them together… just as good as the first time through 😊… now I‘m on to court of wanderers 😊📖

A fun read. Love the mashup of several modern franchises with a little bit of history. Looking forward to the sequel.
Picked this one up because it was the March pick for #swordandlaserpodcast - I‘m not sure if audio was the best way to read this. I kept confusing who everyone was. There was also a lot of death and killing. It is a war book. Also, is it a love triangle if all 3 want to be together?
I didn‘t 1000% follow the action but loved the message. Wu Zetian is such a badass, she enlists as a concubine not to save her family but for revenge &is resigned to.. even welcomes her impending doom. She is paired with Li Shimin &he‘s got issues but they have chemistry &then a boy from her past shows up & it could have become very predictable ..but it didn‘t.
Set in futuristic alternate medieval China. The audiobook narrator was fantastic!
I really REALLY wanted to like this book and for the first 100-150 pages I did. And I know so many people love this novel. But it was somehow over compleceted yet not so detailed. The smaller twist has no indroduction and it's like 5 pages. Zetain is not so likable for me. It so black and white and I would not call this feminism. And don't know if I will read the second part.
Huacos are potteries left in pre-Columbian burial sites, too often pillaged by Europeans “explorers“ and “archeologists“ such as the author's great-grandfather. Gabriela Wiener does not look like her French/Austrian ancestor: her face is reminiscent of huacos, in colour & features. In this autofiction, she writes about family & world history, her personal life, relationships, racism, colourism, decolonialism & sex.

I have been reading these books out of order. Technically they can all be read as stand-alones. However, I wish this particular book I had read sooner since it is about characters that are repeatedly mentioned in later books. Still enjoyed and was glad to fill in some blanks. 4⭐️

This is book 6 in the series. It is a stand alone book but I wished I had read in order since Jessica is a minor character in other books. Also, Nial is mentioned often since he is the leader of the Coalition.
I liked that this book had more plot in it. The characters worked and we get a bit more development in this book. 4⭐️
From all the reviews I‘ve seen, this is very much a “love it/hate it” book with little room in between. So I‘ll start with four words—queer gothic vampire fantasy. Now I‘ll add court intrigue, warring houses, human hunters, monsters, family secrets. All together these ingredients make for what I found to be an entertaining read. It isn‘t deep (not every book has to be) but it is fun with lots of action. First in a series, next book out in April.
