Winterland: A Novel | Rae Meadows

Pickpick

Anya lives in a Soviet factory town that spends much of the year in polar night until she gets her big break to train as a gymnast to bring glory to the motherland. Anya, her family, and friends are all compelling characters and this book exposes the dirty underbelly of state run sport that chews up athletes and spits them out, not to mention the perils of sacrificing everything for political ideals. Great read! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Ok I‘m adding another read to my top 5 of the year so far. Anya was an amazing character and reading about what a gymnast went through during the USSR years was mind boggling. Easily a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ read!

Hello everybody! I‘m new here! But with a little review) Actually I didn‘t like this book, because for me it was about thoughts of many drank persons. It was pretty strange.

Had to drive my son across town and didn‘t feel like driving back just to have to leave and pick him up again. Instead I found a coffee place and am getting started on this chunky book about Siberia.

A good start to 2023. Foster is my first 5 🌟 read but loved both the tagged book and The Diamond Eye. I‘m a little underwhelmed by most of my current reads except the buddy reads Godmothers and Middlemarch. Not sure which #TOB23 book will be next after Notes on Your Sudden Disappearance.

City of Thieves: A Novel | David Benioff

I feel I did this book a disservice when reviewing it this week. I was comparing it to another book & not looking at it for its own merits. This photo is my library copy-read by many-the back looks even worse. I downloaded the library‘s audiobook too so I could listen in the car. The audio was great. During the siege of Leningrad by the Germans two young men are arrested. The only way they will survive is if they can find eggs for the …. 🔽

Suet624 colonel who oversees the prison. This is a nearly impossible task as people in Leningrad are living in terrible conditions & starving. This story is of their quest to make it through the Germans and return to the colonel. It‘s a story of war & friendship & horrid conditions & yet also has a humor running through it. I grew to truly care about the characters. Lots of TW here. I”m sure to remember many of the individual events that took place. 1mo

I love A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra. Recently I listened to a talk he gave where he praised this book & said he liked the humor/tragedy/history of this one and used the same style when writing Constellation. So I had to check it out. Benioff writes of Leningrad battling the Germans and we follow two main characters as they try to obtain eggs for a Colonel. Lots of TW. Definitely enjoyed this one but Marra‘s is better.

Book #2 of 2023 but first book off my #AuldLangSpine list from @Amiable

A book of connecting stories that explore the lives of a community in response to an event. I listened to this one and some stories might not have been as strong as others but it all held my attention. It‘s been on my radar for a long time and am grateful for the push to read it. #52Books #Everyonesreadit
