This one really resonated! Perfect happysad. I want to give this to every child and adult I know. I‘m starting to expect I‘m always going to want to go out and buy Shaun Tan books after reading them.

“If Evan's garden couldn't be a happy place, then it was going to be the saddest and most desolate spot he could make it.“ This quote just shows how upset and sad Evan is.
I think that this book is really realistic and is good for those who are older. To me this book was really sad and intense, it showed the true emotions of how it feels to lose someone who you really love.
The Rough Patch by Brian Lies. 2018. This book is an intense book about how it feel to lose a loved one. The realistic art work and placement of words shows how important this dog was to Evan. When the dog passes the colors changed from bright to dull and and the words from white to black. The lines of truck show movement and excitement as Evan tres to feel better.
The Rough Patch would be a great book to read to a student or class who is grieving a pet, a class pet, or even the loss of a good friend. It helps children to understand that it is okay to be sad but it is still important to do the things you love again.
The Rough Patch by Brian Lies is about a Fox who does everything with his pet, including gardening, but when his dog passes away his attitude changes. The illustrator uses the value of colors to help convey the Fox's emotions. When he is happy with his dog the colors are light and airy, after his dog dies, the colors become dark and eerie.
I said I would do no work today but reading all of these in the heat wave doesn‘t count really 🤔🤷🏻♀️ ( planning a little puppet drama unit for my grade 5‘s to put on for grade ones and our grade 2 buddies)
I have owned this book (& a novel by the same author) for so long that I don't remember when -- or why!! -- I bought them. There was one story in this that was okay, but the rest were...not great. One of the stories was literally a list of all the women the male narrator had made cry & then he'd fall in love with them. Barf. If you remember the "Lad Lit" subgenre, it was sort of like that, but not funny & kind of gross. #storyaday2023 #doublespin
Okay, #HappyFiction buddies! Thoughts? I haven‘t read any of these…. just hoping we don‘t end up with another Auntie Mame! 😬
