“If Evan's garden couldn't be a happy place, then he was going to make it the most saddest place around.“
“If Evan's garden couldn't be a happy place, then he was going to make it the most saddest place around.“
I would read this book in my classroom to show my students that grief is normal but it can get better. Or if there was a loss of a loved one or a pet of one of my students, I would read this to the other students to help them understand.
In this 2918 picture book, Evan and his dog do everything together, but one day the dog dies. A heartbroken Evan destroyed the garden and everything in it. The ground becomes filled with worms and thorns has he embraces the chaos. In the garden, a twisting vine becomes a pumpkin and this gives Evan the hope to go out and form new friendships.
“If Evan's garden couldn't be a happy place, then it was going to be the saddest and most desolate spot he could make it.“ This quote just shows how upset and sad Evan is.
I think that this book is really realistic and is good for those who are older. To me this book was really sad and intense, it showed the true emotions of how it feels to lose someone who you really love.
The Rough Patch by Brian Lies. 2018. This book is an intense book about how it feel to lose a loved one. The realistic art work and placement of words shows how important this dog was to Evan. When the dog passes the colors changed from bright to dull and and the words from white to black. The lines of truck show movement and excitement as Evan tres to feel better.
The Rough Patch would be a great book to read to a student or class who is grieving a pet, a class pet, or even the loss of a good friend. It helps children to understand that it is okay to be sad but it is still important to do the things you love again.
The Rough Patch by Brian Lies is about a Fox who does everything with his pet, including gardening, but when his dog passes away his attitude changes. The illustrator uses the value of colors to help convey the Fox's emotions. When he is happy with his dog the colors are light and airy, after his dog dies, the colors become dark and eerie.
The Rough Patch, written and illustrated by Brian Lies, was published on August 14th, 2018, and is a children's picture book. This book won the Caldecott Medal and is about how a best friend deals with the loss of his friend, and how he overcomes his grief.
I found the audio of this on the Libby homepage, and decided to listen.
It tells the story of a fox (who i thought was a human? The audio doesn‘t make it very apparent) with a beautiful garden he‘s raised with his pet dog. It‘s pretty short, but i enjoyed it.
This is a fabulous book to read to young children. It shows them that when something bad happens, better things grow and come from that which is an important lesson in life. I would read this to first graders and up because they would probably understand the book more and know what is going on.
I LOVED THIS BOOK! It was about a fox who owned a dog and loved to garden with him. Then one day the dog died and the fox was sad and shut himself off from the surrounding world, and he stopped gardening. Then one day he goes to the fair, wins a prize for the biggest pumpkin which is a new puppy and he is happy again! This book is sweet and caring, and the illustrations are amazing. The theme shows that sad things happen, but happier things come.
This was my favorite part! No words just a picture of him driving away with a dog
I really liked how he tried to make the garden sad but then a tiny little pumpkin vine turned into a giant pumpkin
loved this book. I enjoyed the storyline of him being happy, went through struggle found a way back and then began to be happy again. the illustrations are also very colorful and exciting to look at
“There everything grew as big and as beautiful as the sky above them”
The fox began to feel a sense of happiness again by getting out the the fair with his pumpkin
A Caldecott awarded book, the rough patch, shows how even at the lowest of times in your life you can always grow through it. A really good message to send to younger kids at they are growing up.
I loved this picture book so much. It‘s a beautiful story about grief and starting over. It gave me ALL the feels and I also had the biggest garden envy. One day, I will have a garden (and I‘ll actually know how to garden 🤣). 👩🏻🌾♥️🐶

Last day at ALA. Waiting for a few freebies. I was terrible about posting as I am no @MrBook 😂 seriously, your photo documenting of BEA was great. ALA has been awesome but I am ready to put my feet up. One more session and then the airport.
This is a great story for children to learn that everyone has rough times but you‘ll get through them. You have to stay positive.

This is about a fox who does everything with his dog. One day the dog dies and the fox doesn‘t know what to do so he shuts himself in his house. This story takes you through him dealing with the loss.
#lae3414sp19 The picture book “The Rough Patch” (F) Is a NY Best Seller and Caldecott Honor book written and illustrated by Brian Lies. This book is a heartwarming book, about a Fox named Evan who‘s best friend is his dog, and their favorite activity is working on their garden. One day, the dog passes away and Evan becomes depressed. Evan ruins the entire garden out of anger, but leaves one pumpkin vine still in tact. (cont. in comments)
“Prize is ten dollars or one of the pups in that box, the judge said.”
This story started off sad until there was hope for Evan who grew a pumpkin and he won a new best friend.
The Rough patch by Brian Lies is a Caldecott winner is published in 2018. The story begins with a fox Evan who‘s best friend is a dog, they do everything together. One day his best friend died and Evan was so hurt and sad. Evan one day ruined his garden that him and his dog had grown together until weeds had grown. Eventually a pumpkin had grown in his garden. His pumpkin was so big he took it to the fair and won third place and new best friend.
So perfect. This illustrates the mess that loss leaves behind, and how sometimes we just have to let it be a mess for a while. Heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time.
“Evan laid his dog to rest in a corner of the garden, and nothing was the same.”
This would be a good book for a child grieving over a lost friend, pet, or family member. Either who have passed away or have left their lives temporarily/long term. It is indeed a rough patch, but there are brighter moments ahead. I think kids may understand the message, and know that you won‘t always have to be sad. It also shows the stages of grief, which can be very informative and relatable to children in those situations.
This book was beautifully written. It talks about a fox who loses his dog and best friend. While it‘s hard, his garden grows once again and a pumpkin appears. He goes to the fair with his pumpkin, and wins a new puppy. I think this book is a good way to show that when one door closes, another door opens. Even when you‘re most sad, happiness is right around the corner. You just have to look.
#FallIntoReading Day 9: As Fats noted in her review: “This story talks about loss and grief, particularly the death of a pet or, in Evan‘s case, a friend. In spite of it all, Evan managed to find hope and healing through nature. He tended to a prickly, fizzy, spidery, and twisty #pumpkin vine, which later grew into a beautiful #pumpkin.” Her full review: https://wp.me/pDlzr-j8S
