“Every child is like
A little world with ever-changing weather,
Nights and mornings. And somehow, here we are,
Spinning through the universe together.”
Beautiful novel-in-verse - 5th graders use a variety of poetry styles to describe life…

Casey and I are back together for maybe as long as a month and a half! Whee!

I didn‘t like Jenny Colgan‘s first adult boarding school book, so I‘m surprised to report I‘m enjoying the follow-up. There‘s still a fair amount of fat-shaming, but she does delve into issues around disordered eating this time. We‘ll see how that plays out in the back half. The humour seems less cruel in this one, too. I hope that growth‘ll be a series-spanning trend.

Just like with the first one, I can't get over the VERY 2000s obsession with being skinny and how that makes one "hotter," but at least restricted eating actually led to an eating disorder for one of the girls, as it would irl. I'm basically just here for Maggie, David, and Veronica at this point. (The train!!! My God!!!!!!) #contemporaryfiction #britlit #boardingschool

#tob crew, I am ambling through the current and former brackets and need help understanding the zombie picks 😫
How are these chosen? I see it is a poll… does everyone who participates in the poll pick their favorite from among the shortlist, and the two with the highest votes that were also eliminated in previous rounds make a comeback in the quarterfinals?
I don‘t remember those who tob, so consider yourself tagged if you like, and thanks!

BkClubCare Hello! @ruthiella is more an expert than I but will attempt to answer: The zombies are a poll and offered very early in the process. Yes, it does seem like a popularity poll. I rarely have enough read to make even an educated guess so I have been known to skip it, sadly. Many try to consider that”best” or favorite that might get not do well in the bracket. Ah! It is all gambling! Anything can happen. So, as a book fails to advance its _ 2/3 (edited) 1y
BkClubCare _ its bracket, they consider the highest zombie vote getter that could still end up for the zombie rounds. Ask away, if this doesn‘t make sense. I voted for Tomorrow as my zombie this year; I didn‘t vote last year. 1y
Ruthiella You got it @BkClubCare ! I‘m no expert. 😅It usually is a popularity contest in that the zombie poll is so early and I can‘t imagine anyone having read all the shortlist by then. I voted for Mouth to Mouth only because so many on Litsy really liked it. I hadn‘t yet read it. 1y

BkClubCare @Ruthiella - thx for chiming in! AND… I always tell everyone that the whole point of the TOB absolutely is the ridiculousness of attempting to “March Madness” books in a play off!!! It probably most-decidedly shouldn‘t be taken seriously and is all a nutty time to have amazing book discussion. Do not get seduced by any book being better than another. It is the fun of the digging, the analyzing, the thing you hadn‘t thought of. 1y
Larkken @BkClubCare @Ruthiella excellent. Thanks!! That does make sense - it‘s a way for folks to give another shot to the book they are secretly rooting for! Ha, love it. It means I can use it in my own bracket as a “second chance” for my own faves 😉 since my own bracket is all for fun anyway (edited) 1y
Larkken I agree entirely @BkClubCare - I‘ll never be able to keep up with the current tob list, but I love getting the opportunity to compare each book as I read it with everyone else‘s thoughts, even if I read them way after the competition! I was ready to discount Mouth to Mouth as fine but maybe a bit meh but others‘ comments really made me look at the narrative structure in a new way and one which brought more to my analysis of the story 👍🏻 1y
BkClubCare @Larkken - I find it to be one of the best lit discussion corners of the universe. We will have to see what/how Discord/Disqus changes it, tho. Change is inevitable 1y

repost for @BarbaraBB

With the announcement of the #ToB23 shortlist, the zombie vote and the brackets already (!) it is time to think about our alternative tournament as well. We‘ll read the shortlisted books (or most of them) and vote among our group for the same brackets as the real ToB to come up with our own winner. Who wants to join? I am tagging Littens who participated in earlier editions but everyone is welcome to join!

BarbaraBB Thanks for sharing! 1y

Even though the first book in this rereleased series garnered a pan from me (I felt even the narrator was in on the childhood fat shaming), it seems I cannot give up on a J-Co series. I still don‘t love this series, but it‘s growing on me, and dang it, now I‘m awaiting Book3 to see what Maggie does for love.
