I really enjoyed this novel.
A mystery book written aimed towards middle schoolers that navigates recovering from injury, making new friends, challenges and fun moments of growing up, and saving a family cricket farm from tampering.
This book is perfect for middle school readers. The main character is a 7th grade girl who moves to a new state. It helps middle schoolers face the challenge of growing up. She works to save her grandmothers cricket farm.
“Mia's arms were still burning, and now she felt an angry heat growing in her chest, too.“
I think Chirp is a perfect book for middle schoolers to read so they can relate to the challenges Mia faces throughout the story regarding growing up. Mia the main character is in seventh grade so I think this would be a good book to have in the classroom library of a middle school class.
The realistic fiction book titled Chirp written by Kate Messner was published in 2020. This book is a quick paced mystery that talks about family, friendship, and the struggle to speak up as a young girl. A seventh grade girl named Mia navigates the challenges and joys of growing up while moving to Vermont for the summer throughout this easy to read chapter book.
Overall, I thought this was adorable and fun. I never went to camp, fat or otherwise, but I did relate a lot to some of Maggie‘s feelings. I also enjoyed the friendships developed in the story. I‘m curious to see what book 2 will be about.
Maggie's parents send her to "wellness" camp because they think she needs to lose weight. Turns out the camp is run by a vampire.
I'm so glad Johnson decided to continue this series with stand-alone books; love the sharp writing and offbeat characters, but the cliffhangers were killing me. 😁
