The title appears when the discovery that the cave contains clues to the dead woman found floating down the river in a boat.Atmospheric with the Cave‘s dim light,the feeling of disappearing into the dank , damp earth, stalactites,formed by mineral deposits,hang there pointed formations from the cave‘s ceilings, while stalagmites form mounds from the same minerals and rise from the cave‘s floor.

Mordecai‘s an interesting detective. An elderly gentleman whose hobbies are solving crime and reading Romantic Stories, he decides to get away from crime by visiting friends on the island of Moulin d‘Or...but crime has a way of happening, even amidst sunshine, sand, and fresh sea air. Good atmosphere, not gory, mysterious cast of characters, solid plot that‘s not too predictable.

Three adult siblings inherit a rambling country house. They know it needs repairs, but didn‘t know it was haunted. Then the noises start, a dead body is found, and two of the siblings go missing.

Heyer does a good job with atmosphere. Plenty of fraying nerves and short tempers set the mood for a haunted house mystery. Characters aren‘t complex, but a decent read.

I have lost my way.

So far Freya is still managing to maintain appearances, though her feelings of being off track are manifesting in other ways. It‘ll be interesting to see how things get resolved.
