This is an article on sugarcane production in Brazil. It is the world leader in producing this vital staple. The book I'm reading takes place partly on a sugarcane plantation in the early 1900's.

Butterfinger That was interesting. I'm glad it pointed out that the sugarcane development will destroy the rainforest environment. Thank you for sharing. 3y
Butterfinger Diane, I don't know why I tagged you on your own post. It is one of those, "Look at this momma!!!! Her dress turns colors! moments. 3y

Catsandbooks I'm hoping to read this book this week! 3y
TheBookHippie We did this for Bookclub when we were BOTMBUDDYREAD all the questions and research I did is still there but the search for it 😝😩 enjoy it‘s quite good. #botmbuddyread (edited) 3y
Texreader Looks good! Stacked! Thanks for posting the article! (edited) 3y
EadieB I read this too with the BOTM Buddy Read. Enjoyed it very much! Hope you do too! 3y
Crazeedi @EadieB I really am, the audio is very good 3y
EadieB @Crazeedi I think I did audio + book! Good story! I own her other book but haven't read it yet (edited) 3y
Crazeedi @EadieB I ordered the seamstress too, have it in my stack! Lol 3y
EadieB @Crazeedi I could have read it and sent it to you. 3y
Crazeedi @EadieB I guess I should have known you might have! Lol. You've been generous already! 3y
EadieB @Crazeedi You should check with me because I have to read and get rid of my books after I read them as I have too many books. 3y
Crazeedi @EadieB well I will definitely remember (I hope)!! 3y
LitStephanie Clearing rainforests to grow sugarcane to make fuel doesn't seem to be a win for the climate or biodiversity. Interesting that sugar cane is such a big part of Brazil's economy, though! 3y

#BOTMBUDDYREAD FINAL thoughts

Isra was trying to flee with her daughters ..
The most dangerous time for a victim is when she leaves.

What did you think of the read ?

What do you wish had more info ?

Do you think Sarah ever returns ? Would you?

The author lives with her two children and dedicated the book to them. She has said there is a lot of her in this book. Always with the hope words will reach someone and save them.

Reading saves us

SamAnne I really enjoyed the interview and statement at the end of my copy with and from the author. She feared for her life even writing this story. I appreciated this read more than I thought I would at the beginning. 3y
AmyG I loved this book. It‘s a rare book that makes you actually feel what the characters feel. One can only hope this helps other women break free...especially women in the Palestinian community. Rum is a brave woman to have escaped and to have written this book. 3y
Jess861 If this book can help even one person - it is all you can ask for. This book had a powerful message and it is definitely a book everyone should read. May more voices be heard. 3y
See All 16 Comments
Kimberlone I liked that the book ended with hope, even though we know now WHY Isra is murdered. You could almost imagine what might have happened if she‘s been able to successfully escape. 3y
JaclynW @SamAnne @amyg @Jess861 @Kimberlone My thoughts as well. An important story. More stories like this should be shared. What a brave endeavor to take on (sharing your story). Reading saves lives. ❤️ 3y
Riveted_Reader_Melissa I loved the book, such a powerful read. I took the ending a bit differently...we go from Deya saying she‘ll write her own story, so I took the ending as her first writing, the writing of her mother‘s escape and what could have been in a different world, which I found hopeful. 3y
Hooked_on_books I thought the book was terrific. I think the decision of how to order the last two chapters was interesting. If Deya‘s had been last, it would have ended with hope. With Isra‘s last, it ends with a warning. I feel like Rum is asking for us to be happy for Deya but on our guard because nothing has changed. 3y
kspenmoll I just adored this book. Powerful, to me there was a spark of hope that her daughters lives could be different. Reading does save lives, truly. This book really had a deep effect on me. Especially knowing that some of the author‘s own story was among the book‘s pages. 3y
Sargar114 @Hooked_on_books I mentioned that in the last question. I would have preferred them swapped probably because I try to be more optimistic (probably the American in me). You make a good point about Isra‘s chapter, I didn‘t think of it that way. 3y
Hooked_on_books @Sargar114 Yeah, when I first finished I wished they had been in the opposite order, too. I get why she didn‘t do it that way, though. It‘s more realistic but of course harder to swallow. 3y
Sargar114 To answer your other question, I don‘t know if Sarah returns. Because Deya is still living there I think she might... 3y
mollyrotondo I absolutely loved this book. I thought it was so powerful and was extremely relatable to all women everywhere. I thought it was written so thoughtfully and honestly. It is one of my favorite books. 3y
DebinHawaii @Hooked_on_books I think you are exactly right on the order of chapters. I wanted to swap them too @Sargar114 but it makes sense the way she wrote them & there was still hope in it. Such a powerful book. It made it‘s way to one of my best books of the year. So glad it was picked for #sundaybuddyread Thank you! 3y
vlwelser @TheBookHippie Thank you for bringing this book into my life. It was so good. 3y
Sargar114 I agree it was still hopeful @DebinHawaii I had an idea she was running away when Deya shared that memory, so I‘m glad that came to fruition. You‘re right that it makes for a cautionary tale the way it was. Just a personal preference given how gut wrenching most of the book was. 3y
katy4peas The last chapter made me angry and hopeful at the same time! I was mad because I know that she gets caught and I wanted to know how far she gets before Adam finds her. But I want to be hopeful for her and have her get further and I am so proud of her for trying to leave with her girls. My audio copy didn‘t have the author interview. I‘ll have to look for that. 3y

8little_paws I saw BOTM posted a response to what happened. I hope they apologize to those specific posters and they commit to the long term changes they announced. 4y

Reviewsbylola Holy shit! I had no idea. That‘s horrific. The company has really changed in the past few years, and not for the better, so I can‘t say I‘m too surprised. 4y
8little_paws @reviewsbylola @alwaysbeenaloverofbooks I am cautiously optimistic they'll stick to their word. I do think they're fairly diverse in their selections--I have a lot of books by nonwhite people as well as some LGBTQ books from them--they just aren't specifically promoting Black voices as strongly as they could.

Oh my god the anxiety. I feel like this EVERY time I find a rhythm to not be so anxious and then it comes surging back. It always seems to be in an instant like this, too. I just want to hug Nina.

Oh my god, it‘s a miracle they both weren‘t hammered by the end of that event. Wow. Just wow. Is this a real book? I‘d almost read it, just for the laugh now.

Hooked_on_books I am so disappointed in them. What a stupid, tone-deaf, racist thing to do. They should be ashamed. I‘m a little pissed now that I just renewed my membership in April. 4y
TheBookHippie @Hooked_on_books I‘m just truly astounded. So disappointed . 4y
Butterfinger Is this the subscription company? 4y
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger Yes. The BOTM subscription ..Originally we were only BOTM books- but then we just kept the name because we were still one book every month, mixed up with book of the month books . 4y
Butterfinger Thank you for letting me know. How horrible! 4y
TheBookHippie @Butterfinger Still in shock, just awful. 4y
