Footsteps in the Dark | Georgette Heyer
17 posts | 18 read | 13 to read
"Bright and effervescent." -The Time s Literary Supplement What begins as an adventure soon becomes a nightmare... Locals claim it is haunted and refuse to put a single toe past the front door, but to siblings Peter, Celia, and Margaret, the Priory is nothing more than a rundown estate inherited from their late uncle-and the perfect setting for a much-needed holiday. But when a murder victim is discovered in the drafty Priory halls, the once unconcerned trio begins to fear that the ghostly rumors are true and they are not alone after all! With a killer on the loose, will they find themselves the next victims of a supernatural predator, or will they uncover a far more corporeal culprit? What Readers Are Saying: "One of the best stories Mrs. Heyer ever concocted, and of course written in her own inimitable style, with plenty of wit and dry humor." "Spine-tingling enjoyment." Georgette Heyer wrote over fifty books, including Regency romances, mysteries, and historical fiction. Her barrister husband, Ronald Rougier, provided many of the plots for her detective novels, which are classic English country house mysteries reminiscent of Agatha Christie. Heyer was legendary for her research, historical accuracy, inventive plots, and sparkling characterization.

You know that feeling when you just would like a familiar reread? I often turn to Heyer‘s mysteries for that, and this one is one of my favorites.

Recently, following a couple of disappointing reads, I picked it up again.

Very little drama, a cozy village, and an aged manor house at the center of sinisterly mysterious happenings, and of course Heyer‘s witty dialogue and superb characterization. It‘s always entertaining!

Librarybelle Oh! This looks like fun! 2y
mabell @Librarybelle It is! I love revisiting it 2y
robinb Oh my gosh! Heyer wrote mysteries too?! Where have I been?! 🤣 I love her romance. So glad I saw this. 😊 1y

mabell @robinb I think you‘ll enjoy them! I‘m quite opinionated on their relative merits, so if you end up deciding between a couple to read, I‘d be happy to give you my amateur recommendation 😄 1y
robinb @mabell 😂 I meant to ask, do you recommend a starting point/favorite of yours? 1y
mabell @robinb I would say this one, They Found Him Dead, Behold Here‘s Poison, or Death in the Stocks would all be good choices! The last three are more classic mysteries, and this one is a bit different. 1y
mabell @robinb The ones I would steer away from - A Blunt Instrument is iffy and the same with The Unfinished Clue. Not ones I enjoy rereading so much. And I hated Penhallow 😆 1y
robinb @mabell don‘t hold back…Penhallow is a definite NO. 😂😂 Thanks for the others! They are going on my never ending list. 1y
mabell @robinb I am quite opinionated on this 🤣 No problem! I hope you enjoy! I agree on the never ending list - and I don‘t even have to keep up with ARCs and reviews! 1y

I thoroughly enjoyed this mystery. Perfect read for a cozy stay under blankets Day, with murder, secret passages and questionable side characters. Anyone and everyone is suspect but the residents are not sure of what they suspect, only that a ghost may not be a ghost. Also my November #bookspin

mabell Love this one!!! (Obviously 😆) 2y
Chrissyreadit @mabell Im pretty sure it was from you! And you are why I started reading Heyer- I loved this one too! 2y

Chrissyreadit @mabell don‘t be embarrassed- I forget who was sent what all the time! But I associate Heyer with you- and love Heyer at this point! 2y
mabell 🥰🥰🥰 2y
mabell Also, in our TINY house, I‘ve lost your wrapped Christmas book!! I was trying to find the right size box to send it, and now I have no idea where it is. These three plead innocent 👨🐶🐶 … 2y

And Week 4‘s check-in for #BFC :

I reread Footsteps in the Dark, a fun Heyer mystery that takes place in a recently inherited country house. The young and intrepid proprietors investigate to find the source of the hauntings beleaguering their new home.

I did some damage at Barnes and Noble tonight... #bookhaul #bnbookhaul

The Marlon James wasn't part of the 50% off sale, but was 40% off for members.

Has anyone read any of these?

LibrarianRyan We have similar tastes. I didnt get XY but I thought about it. 5y
LibrarianRyan And Light was one of the ones not 50% off in my store. 5y
silentrequiem @LibrarianRyan It's definitely 50% off online. It should have been on sale in store too. And the ratings for The XY are really low.... 😑 5y

LibrarianRyan @silentrequiem should have been being the optimal words. My store honored the haul pricing for Courting darkness but since I forgot my list at work, the others I couldn‘t remember off the top of my head. I might try again later this week. 5y
silentrequiem @LibrarianRyan You could order them online. You should get free shipping. Though I hate waiting. Ha! 5y
silentrequiem @LibrarianRyan Oh! Or order online for store pickup. No waiting for the mail 😁 5y
LibrarianRyan @silentrequiem I know I can. I just haven‘t. I have ordered and had delivered to store multiple times. 5y

This the first Georgette Heyer I‘ve read. It was a fun and entertaining mystery even though it was easy enough to guess the villains.

Three adult siblings inherit a rambling country house. They know it needs repairs, but didn‘t know it was haunted. Then the noises start, a dead body is found, and two of the siblings go missing.

Heyer does a good job with atmosphere. Plenty of fraying nerves and short tempers set the mood for a haunted house mystery. Characters aren‘t complex, but a decent read.

Probably fine, but I've found the worst thing to do in a readathon is try to force yourself through a book. Then you start the next one all cranky and it can quickly domino. #readathon

The women in this story were so silly and caricatured that I thought I‘d lose my eyes from rolling them so much. 🙄

A different type of mystery from Georgette Heyer - in this one it isn't the clever Scotland Yard detectives pursuing the solution, but rather a group of smart brothers and sisters. Having inherited the country house from an uncle, they were excited to enjoy the "advantages" of the aged structure. They soon find their roseate picture of country life darkened by a ghost story of a mysterious Monk. Are the suspicious happenings actually supernatural?

LeahBergen Ooo! I haven‘t read this one. 6y
mabell @LeahBergen It's a good one! 👍 6y

@bookriot #readharder2017 Published between 1900 and 1950 ✅. 4 ⭐ and I'll definitely be reading more Georgette Heyer in the future.
Couldn't help but fancast Matt Lucas, Peter Capaldi and David Suchet into 3 of the characters!
Also my second book for the #24hrtbrreadathon @Bookishlychaot1c

mjdowens I have picked so many of her books but have yet to purchase or read one. Any suggestions on which one to start with? 7y
CoffeeK8 @mjdowens so many good choices! Are you romance reader or do you prefer mysteries? She does both so well but that'll help figure out where to start 7y
mjdowens I would go more for mysteries, but if there is some light romance I am okay with that 7y
mabell This is a good one! Not my favorite of her mysteries, but still lots of fun! The aunt is such a great character ❤️ 7y
jenniferw88 @mjdowens I think our reading tastes are similar - I'm not overkeen on romance, but it is a side plot in this mystery (& I'm a big mystery fan)! 7y
mjdowens 👏👏👍👍 7y
wordslinger42 I've read False Colours and listened to Venetia on Audible (narrated by Richard Armitage 😍) -- definitely more Georgette Heyer in my future also! 7y
