Pierre Berton always writes solid, readable history books. In this one I especially liked how he talked about what Vimy meant to Canadians at the time of writing. Would be interesting to see if that perception has changed at all.

Animals were a very important part of warfare, and this book certainly proves it. With a collection of short heroic animal stories, the author illustrates just how important animals were, and how they saved the Canadian front lines. If you like books with war or animals, then this is the book for you. The genre is non-fiction, war.
Innocent Heroes is a unique celebration of the important role animals play in war, and an insightful look at the taking of Vimy Ridge from the perspective of three men in the Canadian platoon. Sigmund Brouwer will be at #emwf18 to read from his middle grade historical novel! bit.ly/2Mnwwsq @PenguinRandomCa #canlit #middlegrade
