An excellent breakdown of the different kinds of barking that dogs express, their causes, and how we should handle undesirable barking.

"You must accept that your dog should be allowed to bark sometimes. It is natural. He has a voice, and needs to be allowed to use it."

"...only 6 percent of the dogs who were relinquished had attended obedience classes or some kind of professional training."

I feel this really shows the importance of dog training, it can help keep dogs in homes and out of shelters!

This book was fantastic! It really makes you think about the legal status of dogs and cats. It gives both sides of animal rights and welfare into account along with the incredible history of dogs and cats from Egypt to the Black Plague, to modern era military dogs.

I highly recommend this book for anyone interested in dogs and cats.

This book is absolutely incredible. I am learning so much about the history of dogs and cats!

Did you know: In ancient Egypt, if a cat died in a home, all the people in the home would shave their eyebrows off to acknowledge the loss of the beloved cat. Homes with cats had higher amounts of food and less death (due to less rodents). Even back then our felines were appreciated!

This book dives deep into the emotions of dogs and humans. It really opened up my eyes to what my dogs are thinking and feeling and having more empathy for their fear.
McConnell supports her writing with many studies and personal experiences working with the dogs on her farm and in owner homes.
She even breaks down the areas of the canine brain in a very understandable way.
I recommend this book to all dog owners and professionals!

DogMomIrene I read The Other End of the Leash in December. Loved the audiobook so much I bought the print copy too so I could highlight and take notes. 5y

This book has some good points on enrichment.. but it also contains dangerous and outdated training suggestions.

The dog chapter is about "dominating" your dog. This dominance theory has been disproven and deemed dangerous by the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior and other professionals.

It also talks a LOT of Ceser Millan, a TV star who has no legitimate education in animal behavior. I recommend sticking to more updated books.
