Coraline
Coraline | Neil Gaiman
In Coraline's family's new flat there's a locked door. On the other side is a brick walluntil Coraline unlocks the door . . . and finds a passage to another flat in another house just like her own. Only different. The food is better there. Books have pictures that writhe and crawl and shimmer. And there's another mother and father there who want Coraline to be their little girl. They want to change her and keep her with them. . . . Forever. Coraline is an extraordinary fairy tale/nightmare from the uniquely skewed imagination of #1 New York Times bestselling author Neil Gaiman.

“When you‘re scared but still do it anyway, that‘s brave”. — Coraline

Do you have those dreams where you discover your house has rooms you never knew (or forgot) existed? And you explore, and meet people? This story is like that, but a lot creepier! A creepy I could handle, though. still have to watch the movie someday.

This book is one of my absolute favorite books of all time. There are few illustrations, but of the ones that there are explain so much about the story and how grim the setting is. It is an easy read, but does not have a casual or predictable storyline.
Aside from these points, the wording of the book is great. The imagination throughout and how the plot thickens is perfect for children who are looking to get into a different type of story.

em_lemo Published in 2002, Neil Gaiman is known for making stories that one may refer to as spooky or grim. I would suggest any of his books. Another favorite is The Graveyard Book. Although I love that book as well, one of my favorite quotes throughout Coraline is,
“Oh my twitchy witchy girl I think you are so nice,
I give you bowls of porridge and I give you bowls of ice cream...“
This goes on like a little song that her father sings to her.

Such a true statement about cats 😂 This book didn‘t scare me, even though the button eyes are creepy. Very good story. Another Gaiman checked off my tbr list. @Clwojick non-theme book for #teamslaughter #scarathlon #screamathon @4thhouseontheleft

Second book for Dewey‘s 24 hr readathon. #readathon #deweysreadathon

I love Neil Gainan‘s books for kids so much (does The Ocean at the End of the Lane count as a kids book? Because I loved it too), but I can‘t seem to enjoy his books for adults. Why is that?

Anyway, I loved this book!- it was worth the wait. (I saved it for a readathon!)

Linsy Loved that book!!! I love both his adult and kids books, but they are written differently and so I get why your brain separates them! I‘d agree that The Ocean at the End of the Lane has a feel more like his younger fiction than older. Have you tried Stardust?? 2mo
NomiReads @Linsy actually I haven‘t tried Stardust yet. Is that a bit more like his kids books than his other adult books? I‘ve tried American Gods and Elsewhere and both times was so disappointed. (Especially with American Gods!- it 2mo
Linsy @NomiReads It has more of a fairy-tale feel than his other adult novels. Completely different from American Gods. 2mo

Coraline by Neil Gaiman is like the Coraline movie that was made. I only read chapter one but it has the same storyline. It is about a girl named Coraline and her family moves into a mansion that is unusual things like a talking cat. Things get weird when Coralines mother kidnaps the girls real parents leaving Coraline to rely on the assistance of the ghost children. It is a very creepy and scary book but that is my type of book so I loved it.

I chose this book because it is my twin daughter's favorites and mine.
Coraline“ by Neil Gaiman is a novel turned animated motion picture of an 11 year old adventurous girl feeling bored, neglected and unappreciated by her parents ventures out to find anything with not only excitement but change. She comes across a secret door to a parallel world with loving and caring parents that dote on her every need and want until things turn for the worst.

Tinks This novel would be best under both MF and SF due to its combination of scientific fantasy nature with a wickedly morbid modern twist to it. Although some parents might feel they wouldn't want their child to read this, it is a novel geared towards ages 8+. I feel it should be added to a classroom library possibly under supervision until parental consent. I personally would not see a problem in having my children read it if they were younger. 2mo
Tinks The UDL principle 8.4 regarding increasing mastery-oriented feedback along with E.L. 37 for using language experience techniques in discussing concepts and ideas. All can be met and accomplished through this novel. The lesson behind this novel aside from the obvious entertainment and enjoyment that it brings is that the grass isn't always greener on the other side. A must-read and an added bonus of viewing it on the movie screen. #UCFLAE3414F19 2mo
CPettersen My favorite book! My cat is even named after it! Very well done! 2mo
TristanPool This book scared me when I was little!😂 but it was such a good read that I couldn‘t help but keep reading. Definitely need parent approval needed, but the message of “grass isn‘t always greener on the other side” is important! @Tinks 2mo
JRone I didn‘t even know this was a book! I watched the movie when I was younger and it was definitely intriguing. I also like the UDL and EL strategies you used, it goes along with the book nicely! 2mo

I make a point to reread this every few years or so. I first read it when I was in 4th grade, when it had first come out. I loved it and reread it quite a bit, but every few years it seemed to be a little creepier than I had remembered.

I think the magic of this book is that it is for children, who see the magic and whimsy and some fear, but view it mostly as a fun, suspenseful adventure book where good prevails over evil.

Another Gaiman audiobook with this one. I will be honest I loved the book it‘s great Gaiman work at hand once again. But Chapter 13 just seemed unnecessary , but I am conflicted because long before I even knew it was a book I fell in love with the Movie and that might be why I feel this way. I was also sad to learn Wybie was not in the book, I adored that kid haha.

I liked every page in this book. Literally.

We follow Coraline on her journey to escape her “boring” life, where basically she feels ignored, to the life on the other side of the hall...

The life with The Other Mother and her Other Father.

But could these parents really be better than her original mother and father? Ones with button eyes? Luckily she has a handy cat keeping her company and legitimately speaking words of advice!

Awesome story!
