I found this book difficult to read in some places as sometimes it felt like it was about myself - I could see myself in all the characters, the good and the bad. I sometimes found myself thinking about my own relationship with my mum and this, although uncomfortable for me in places, is what made this book special

I read this book in one sitting and really enjoyed it. I could feel the connection between the two main characters coming off the pages and would be equal parts sympathetic and frustrated with them!

What a beautiful story – two stories, actually! The imagery it provokes made me feel like I was right there with them. It also opened my eyes as I had to keep reminding myself that one half of this book was set in 2011, you could easily fool yourself into thinking this stuff was happening 20–30 years ago. The sad thing is it still happens today, but books like this keep the beauty of those places alive.

I read this book a while ago but even typing the name into the search bar just now brought back all the feelings I experienced during the book. I cried on and off for days after reading this book. Janusz Korczak is a name that will stay with me forever, and I hope that one day I can achieve even a fraction of what he did in his life.

Having seen the film and recently read several books based in Warsaw during WW2 I thought this was an obvious next choice. I really struggled to get into it and could not engage with the characters. Sadly, I gave up and will probably not be revisiting

I got sucked into the lives of this family and even find myself now imagining what they might be doing!
