Growth is such a huge part of our human experience. I know that as I have continued on through my 20s I learned lessons time and again that I thought I learned as a kid. Some of them I learned the hard way. Some of them through the cautions of those older than me who had chosen a wrong path. Jude‘s path has been rough and winding but it makes her who she is just like me. @NCHPedsReads #FEBPedsReads

Johernandez I think growth is key. The book helped me look at things from Judes perspective coming from the Middle East. Excited to move onto the next book but sad to leave this one. 4y

Hope is such a wonderful agent for change. Though some people take activism to an extreme and resort to violence, that is the way they can sometimes manifest hope. Jude is full of hope for all of her loved ones and takes hope in a non-violent path. From the members of her family she leaves behind to her new acquaintances in the US, she hopes for growth and peace. @NCHPedsReads #FEBPEDSreads

Jude deals with so many people projecting their stereotypes onto her the longer she spends in America. She even has it happen within her own family. Sarah complains that she doesn‘t even know English before she asks Jude if she does. Have you dealt with projected stereotypes? How do you deal with them? @NCHPedsReads #FEBPEDSreads

Bshelton27 I thought that was so sad. I feel like as a family member she should be more supportive of her cousin. 4y
Giovanny_Vargas I thought this was very sad, but sadly I can relate to this. Being a Hispanic who speaks Spanish there are times where people assume I don‘t know English or my English is not that great just because I speak Spanish. Even times when they‘re shocked that I speak English. I‘ve just learned to shrug it off! 4y
sydneydaniels Stereotypes are definitely portrayed in this book. It‘s unfair to assume like that! 4y

Jude left her family for her own safety and the safety of her family. I can‘t imagine the type of courage it takes to be Jude‘s mom. You have to start over in a new country with brand new customs and language, all while leaving your son and father in an area you know is dangerous. These are the types of situations that galvanize or tear apart a family. I hope for Jude‘s sake, it‘s the former. @NCHPedsReads #JanPEDSReads

Giovanny_Vargas The fact that Jude and her mom left leaving her brother and father behind made me so sad! I cannot imagine having to split up from my siblings let alone leaving them behind somewhere that is very dangerous. #JanPedsReads #NCHPedsReads 4y

Other Words for Home by Jasmine Warga starts the story of Jude and her family‘s interaction with unrest and revolutionary ideas of the young population of Syria. Jude is just like any other growing young lady, laughing at American pop culture and dreaming of being a movie star. But she has the heartbreaking addition of watching her brother Issa and father Baba, argue about Syria‘s political direction. excited to learn more! #JanPEDSReads

Johernandez Cody, awesome job on not saying too much! Some of the content was surprising to me because it‘s pretty mature but war and political change are mature subjects. I‘m concerned about Baba and how his feelings towards Issa and Jude will progress. 4y
NCHPedsReads Thank you, @CodyFordPEDS for getting the conversation started! We are all excited to see how Jude evolves throughout the story! #NCHPedsReads #JanPedsReads 4y
kennedimartin Hi Cody! I‘m a bit past this part in the book, but the political issues are getting more intense and I‘m really worried for the characters! I‘m so excited to keep reading to see how they learn to adapt to what‘s going on in their country 4y

Giovanny_Vargas I love how into Pop culture Jude is and I love how you mentioned that. I thought it was so funny how she mentioned watching Reese Witherspoon go to law school. That movie is iconic! #NCHPedsReads #JANPedsReads (edited) 4y
Bshelton27 I also am looking forward to learning about Syria! I can honestly say that I really don‘t know anything about it! I‘m excited to dive into this book! 4y
